Handgun sales on the rise Last updated Dec 19 2005 07:49 AM MST CBC News Gun shop owners say handgun sales in Edmonton are skyrocketing since Prime Minister Paul Martin's promise to ban them.
The Liberal Leader made the promise a few weeks ago during a campaign stop in Toronto.
FROM DEC. 8, 2005: Liberals vow to ban handguns Phil Harnois is a former police officer who now owns a gun shop. Since the Liberal announcement, he says handgun sales have increased dramatically.
He says his distributors have virtually nothing left in their warehouses, something that is very unusual.
"There's always some odd piece here or there depending on the time of year," he told CBC News.
Harnois says the Liberal promise has pushed people to buy guns before the ban is imposed.
The Liberals say the goal of the handgun ban is to make communities safer.

This happened Pre-Brady in the US. Best 4 months of sales and service I have ever had.
so it seems that canadian citizens known the "ban" is useless and will make canadian citizens LESS safe.
I think canadians have expressed their real opinion on the handgun ban.
Why would anyone buy one? All you have to do is go pick one up in the street. After all the streets are flooded with them according to the press
Not to mention this is in Edmonton.
Watch out Anne!
"He says his distributors have virtually nothing left in their warehouses, something that is very unusual."
They've seen the footage from New Orleans and Clichy-sous-bois just as well as we have, and therefore know just as well as we do, that they're ultimately on their own, when push comes to shove if social order falls apart.
Good news!
I guess the Canucks are voting with their holsters. Good for them. As usual, gun bans cause...a huge increase in gun buying. As it should be!
This is why I made sure to purchase several guns at gun shows, in the south.....IN THE PARKING LOT!
But, but, I thought guns were evil?
All guns want to do is run around and shoot innocent people.
That isn't all they do. Sometimes rogue SUVs drive the guns around so they can shoot people.
This is why it would make sense for a couple friends to purchase a bunch of firearms and then sell them amongst themselves. I purchased two revolvers from my cousin's husband's former father-in-law last year and stayed within the letter of the law with virtually no troublesome paperwork involved.

Does anybody track this for the US? I bought 3 this year, and after katrina, I betcha the sales were through the roof.
Marstar is sold out of a lot of stuff too. Lots of the (restricted - not prohibited) semi-auto carbines are apparently getting picked up lately as well.
Just a logical reaction to the possibility of being downgraded to a defenseless serf.
I hope this gun ban proposal blows up in their faces.
It's better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it.
Fear the government that fears your guns.
"The only thing that could have saved them, was another group of hard men, with guns in hand. Think about that for a while".
