GOP Nears Deal on Immigration

Senate Republicans reached agreement last night on a compromise immigration measure that they believe will garner enough bipartisan support to break through a parliamentary impasse that has stymied progress on a high-stakes border security bill for two weeks.

Under the agreement, the Senate would allow undocumented workers a path to lawful employment and citizenship if they could prove -- through work stubs, utility bills or other documents -- that they have been in the country for five years. To attain citizenship, those immigrants would have to pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years.

Those who have been here a shorter time would have to return to one of 16 designated ports of entry, such as El Paso, Tex., and apply for a new form of temporary work visa for low-skilled and unskilled workers.

You seem to think that Hispanics are unassimilatable diseased drunks into the drug trade, who despite low wages will drive up housing prices, and are at once hostile to democratic values, and are Catholic bots to boot, despite all of the above character flaws. Some might think your post was a bit of a mouthful. Some might even view it as a verbal cartoon.

Mene despises the Catholic Church, so naturally that leads the list.

We're ALL diseased drunks, to him, hostile to democratic values, and ready to turn America into a Papal State.

A whole industry has developed for the purpose of providing illegals with phony documents. Pay stubs won't be a problem.

Something like 2/3 of applicants in 1986 were fraudulent..9 out of 10 were given permanent residence anyway and half are now citizens and many more relatives hae gained legal residence its a pyramid scheme..and Congress knows it...Clinton pushed the citizenship in 1995 before the election and they were pushed through. 1.5 million new Americans and probably 1/2 to 2/3 fraudulent...

Fraudulent rent receipts, pay stubs etc. Packages were selling on the streets from $1,00 to about $4,000. With todays technology it will be even harder to detect...with millions of applicants it will be rubber stamped with no investigation...for more information go to VDARE

Anyone know a decent country to move to?

Agree with the proviso that we really secure our borders. We could learn some lessons from the UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi where expats make up 30% total to 40% of the population. Employers must sponsor anyone coming to work and passports are held by them. If a worker changes an employer, he must go out of the country and reapply. There are stiff penalties for the employers who don't comply.

While abortion may play a part, entitlements play a bigger part. JMO
I have no problem with a guest worker program so long as they apply from their home country (and once here, they get no entitlements. If they can't self-sustain, go back to their COI). Those already here illegally would not qualify.
The guest worker program notwithstanding, we should seal the border first, then start the program. These senators are pandering to illegals when they should be doing the will of the true citizens of this country.

especially when the boomers start dying off.

legal immigration is the best course - but the current chaos will illegal border crossers has essentially destroyed the US legal immigration system. legal immigration allows you to pick and choose who you want, set target numbers for how many come, perform proper background checks to stop criminal elements, build family structures, etc. all these good aspects of legal immigration, that illegal immigration is stealing from our society.

I don't see a picture of the President on that array. He has done more to harm us on this issue than anyone you pictured.

When I first arrived here I worked in a restaurant. All the workers were illegal mexicans. I asked the one who had arrived 4 months before how he did it. He said he walked and then took a bus to the San Francisco bay area, where he knew other illegals and in 2 days he had a fake green card and a fake social security card. How easy is it going to be to get fake stubs?.

You can put all three of those countries INSIDE the border of Texas and still have room left over. Take a look at the map of USA and the magnititude of its borders. It is not feasible to fence US in or THEM out. Need another plan.

Legal immigration also gives us control over the numbers. We can't assimilate the numbers that are coming in now and this wave of immigrants are dominated by hispanics who wish to retain their language and culture.

I feel stupid but I had to find out what the 17th amendment so I looked it up.

I wanted to let you know what I found when I was looking up information on the 17th Amendment and that is there is already an effort to repeal it. It's interesting reading about the balance of power. Our founding fathers had it right in the first place which is not at all surprising.

I totally agree with repealing the 17th Amendment. My tagline since almost day one.

The Senate is supposed to represent state's interests. A grassroots campaign would start with the Governors and leaders of the State Houses. I wonder how many of them know about the 17th Amendment.

Remember no matter what the Senate does it has to be reconciled with the House. I do not think the House will go along with anything resembling amnesty.

Could it be that those who are willing to undergo the gauntlet of "invading" illegally, is a self selective group of the most ambitious and entrepreneurial? This insane system we have, just might in the end be a rather useful filter of getting the best and the brightest of those who want to achieve upward mobility, because they are capable of it, and have value added skills, that can be realized in the American market. Just a thought, off the top of my head. There is an upside to speculations, along with the downside. Unremitting gloom and doom might not be the most accurate crystal ball in which to gaze.

Yes. The 2000 is a joke, the average citizen working for the wages these illegals make gets 5 times that in government services and direct cash payments EVERY year.

It would be a great investment.

Put up a fence, or several fences. Also use the troops that are sitting around here and national guard patrols. there are many ways to guard our border. No, it won't be "perfect", but it sure would stem the tide.

If one dirty bomb crosses our border....that border will be covered in 24 hours with shoot to kill orders. Your reaction" We CAN"T seal the border" is the usual going nowhere concept.

No border security is perfect....but we have to start somewhere. BTW, if we enforce the employeer to follow the law and cut welfare benefits, we don't even have to close the border.

There you go, Moron.

Legal immigration - Good
Illegal immigration - Not good.
What is the population of the US? 300,000,000?
Yes, we need guest workers but the key word here is "legal".
Blame abortion, entitlements etc. Don't matter. The key word is "Legal".
Oh, and waving their foreign flag while burning ours does not help their cause.
I love my country. The USA. I also happen to be hispanic (Talk about an abused word)not of mexican descent. But I am American FIRST.

This is all window dressing in an important election year.

Enforcing the existing laws on the books will go some ways towards solving this problem.

The US government is incapable of processing 11-20 MILLION criminal aliens.

This is a joke.

10% who cross are criminals from their home country according to stats I have seen - and we can see that manifestation in US prison rates of illegals. we also bring in alot of single men - we could be bringing in new legal immigrants who have existing family structures inside the US, that could help support them in their transitions. we could also bias legal immigration to bringing in new people who have already learned some english.

we can do better.
