Statement by President Bush on Immigration [12:36 PM, Apr 6 2006]

Charlotte, NC

I'm pleased that Republicans and Democrats in the United States Senate are working together to get a bipartisan comprehensive energy bill -- let me start over. I'm pleased that Republicans and Democrats in the United States Senate are working together to get a comprehensive immigration bill.

I want to thank the efforts of those involved in the process. I appreciate their understanding there needs to be a comprehensive immigration bill. I recognize there are still details to be worked out. I would encourage the members to work hard to get the bill done prior to the upcoming break.

Thank you all.

Press Gaggle by Scott McClellan

En route Charlotte, North Carolina

Aboard Air Force One

You've heard the President talk about how he wants a comprehensive bill to get out of the Senate. And the President believes it's important that we address the immigration problems in a comprehensive way. And that's what he has proposed and that's what we're continuing to work with leaders in the Senate to get done.

I mentioned to you yesterday that the President met with the bicameral Republican leadership, and this was an issue that was discussed. And they reiterated the importance of getting a comprehensive bill passed.

The President appreciates the efforts of Senator Frist and others in the Senate to build broad support for a comprehensive piece of legislation. I know Senator Hagel and Senator Martinez have been working to try to bring people together around a compromise and build as broad a support as possible to move the legislation forward. There is a lot of activity that will be going on today in the Senate.

Nothing about filling "jobs that Americans won't do" (for $4.00 an hour and no benefits)?

Is that the entire speech? He gave a TWO-LINE speech and managed to bumble it? Oh boy ...

I'm encouraging them to leave early. And they can pick up working on the bill after the November elections when hopefully they are not here to work on it.

He dropped that. Then he played the "racist" ("uncivil") card and dropped that too after the protests. But had Jeb play that one yesterday. Time to bring out Laura to instruct women how they should think?

Two-lines may be an improvement for our stammerer-in-chief.

I feel all I can do is pray for our leaders and President Bush... it seems DC has all but made their minds that America does not matter...

The Hagel-Martinez amendment has not passed the Senate.

This bill can still be killed in the Senate, if enough amendments are offered to the bill to turn it into a 'poison pill' for Democrats and liberal Republicans.

Well, Laura already informed us we were "sexist" for being unimpressed with Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court.

I love GWB and Laura for many reasons, but I am ready for new conservative blood to lead the GOP. No McLame, and no more Bushes.

I would encourage the members to work hard ...

Then you'll have to get some Mexicans to write the bill; us gringos are fat and lazy, if you hadn't heard, and won't do certain jobs, especially those that involve hard work.

I am not worried about a job but if integration keeps up we will not know America as we do today. YOU WILL LEARN SPANISH!

They don't follow any of the current rules! What makes anyone think they'll follow the new rules?

Bush sounded much smoother when he gave the same speech in his preferred language, Spanish.

i've been saying this for some time now. Reform the welfare program in with the immigration program. A welfare receipient for each illegal alien. There will be enough lazy a$$es in this country to work those jobs and quit milking our country!

"Ever wonder why companies hire Mexicans (illegal or not)? It's because they don't demand artificially high wages mandated by the socialist legislating sphincters. Hell, I'll take $1 an hour. Money is money."

1 dollar an hour is about 200 dollars a month. Do you really think anyone in america can survive on 1 dollar an hour? You might as well work for free.
