Retired Border Patrol Chief says Bush plan is good start

President Bush says he’ll send the National Guard to the southern border, 24 hours after the announcement the Border Patrol has yet to comment, but News 4 tracked down a former Tucson Sector chief for his opinion of the President’s plan.

In a move to reform America ’s current immigration system, President Bush announced the deployment of up to 6,000 National Guard Troops to the U.S. Mexico Border.

Bush stated, “The United States is not going to militarize the southern border.”

Bush said that the Border Patrol will remain in the lead using support from the troops in roles like operating surveillance systems and installing fences and vehicle barriers.

News 4 contacted Tucson Sector Border Patrol but the agency headquarters in Washington did not permit them to comment.

But Ron Sanders, who served as the chief of the Tucson Sector Border Patrol for five years, did comment. He’s now retired and living out of state.

Sanders said, “If you can have someone from the Guard monitoring those cameras, that frees up an agent to put on the line.”

And with some troops already on the border, his experiences have taught him that even a comprehensive plan will not halt the flow of illegal immigration.

Sander said, “It looks to me like this is more of a band-aid approach. It’s a good approach, it's a good first step, it's better than nothing, but you have a long ways to go until you secure that border.”

A border that has already had more than 12 million people cross it, “So when people from other countries come in, they realize that they can get a job, violate the law and no one is going to come after them, it just serves as a magnet to draw other people into the country.”

I agree. It is a good first step. Now we just have to get the Pres to take that second step.

Bush stated, “The United States is not going to militarize the southern border.”

Has the job of defending the citizens within Iraq (both U.S. and Iraqi) become too much of a burden for our military services ? If that is indeed the case, perhaps we should just plainly admit that. Otherwise some might begin to wonder if the people living within Iraq have become a greater priority then the people living within the U.S. .

There's an elemental racism at work in the President's plan. He simply prefers Mexicans. All of us may have thought we'd done away with the "national origins" quota deal 40 years ago, but the only folks "W" wants to focus on are the 12 million Mexicans already in the country.

That's a national origin quota!

Amazingly an awful lot of Democrats are going along with him on that (/sarcasm ~ we all know Dems are racists, so no surprise here.)

That's why "W" is not going to take the "second step".

The entire border is out of control. Ted K started this mess in 1965 with the Immmigration Act. I would put landmines, claymores, concertina wire and lots of voltage on the fences we already have. Where no fence exists, I would have anti personnel mines, pits with punji stakes, and all signs would be in English. That would help the few who make it here assimilate. Sorry to be so hard, but; pull a May Day protest on me, and;I see red.

Sort of like the punchline to the old joke:

Q: What do you call a thousand dead lawyers at the bottom of the sea?

A: A good start.

Duty,Honor, and Country. Roger that. Why do our politicians, who oversee our military, fail to live by the same code as our military does? Are they above the law? This PC Multiculterism BS is eroding this nation's values. What are we now? A nation of PC multiculterism whimps? Very sad. I refuse to be a sheep led by politicians, who have never even commanded a rifle company in combat.
