Injustice to the wage earner

Enron made its payroll. No wage earner at Enron failed to receive a paycheck for work they actually performed.

...let the conspiracy theories begin! Karl Rove told Cheney to have his Halliburton co-conspirators enlist a hit man from the Dubai Mafia to rub him out before he writes a tell-all memoir from prison, etc. etc. I am sure the DUmmies are starting to gin that up now.

The man was probably carrying a very guilty conscience, too

I wouldn't know why as he did nothing wrong, contrary to the government's view.

Prayers for his family

Rules were made to prevent them from diversifying.

Could you clarify this? I thought the employer match was ONLY in Enron, but what options did the employees have in where their 401(k) Pre-tax contributions went?

Well, I am sorry for his family he died. I don't think prison for the rest of his life would have served his family well...in the long run.

All I know was what was brought out in the trial. I spotted that when they (the execs) saw Enron was about to implode they imposed illegal rules to prevent stock collapse before they safely saw their own stock sold.

I think Ken Lay deserved to go to prison etc. The thing that bothered me the most about him is that he never seemed to have any remorse. He just seemed to think the world was treating him unfairly. I also remember his wife on television after the whole story broke, wearing a Rolex and crying about how they had to sell one of their vacation homes. she said they had nothing left. They were all about themselves and didn't care about anyone else.

Unfortunately, he will never go to jail.

They didn't know any better.

Does anyone over the age of 12 NOT know that you must diversify investments? You are gambling if you don't.

In New England when Bank of New England went down the same thing happened. Some of the employees had only BONE stock in their portfolio. IIRC the fed bailed out the bond holders, not stock holders.

I gotta tell you, I don't think Ken Lay was this monster they made him out to be.

Remember seeing on TV conducting an Enron employee meeting, fraudulently pumping the company, emploring employees to buy Enron stock while he was in the process of unloading his. Ken Lay was a first class shyster crook ... for those of you out there in FReeper land defending this POS you are obviously misinformed.

Ayn Rand says "The love of money is the root of all good" and to "run for your life from the man who says money is evil"

The Bible says man can't serve two masters, that he'll love one and hate the other.

They had no choice in the matter as far as their 401k was concerned.

You can put whatever you want in a 401k.

My portfolio is overweighted toward shares of employer as well - it's a form of compensation.

The remedy for this is to sell shares as they vest in order to diversify.

If people had their life savings in the stock these means one of two things: they failed to diversify by selling shares of stock that had vested or they took savings they already had and deliberately overweighted their portfolio toward Enron stock.

Neither was wise.

Why does Drudge always give reports and not make sure they are correct.

It's not uncommon for the initial reports of breaking news to contain inaccuracies. It happens here all the time. That's the way it is.

Bush did it.

Ken Lay had information on the crooked dealings of the evil Bush administration and financed Karl Rove's hurricane machine. He and Bush plotted to release little gremlins that cause all of us daily misery by stealing our socks. Lay had the goods on Bush.

Bush did it.

I actively followed the Enron matter daily for more than 2 yrs on 3 stock message boards, starting 48 hours before the BK petition was filed on 2 Dec 01. It was one bizarre education and look at several occupational disciplines, I assure you. I was addicted, as were many. A subsidiary of Arthur Andersen Inc openly taught the tactics used, in seminars.....to many companies, some of which also went over the edge as enron unfolded. Benignly called "managed earnings" but the inner workings facilitate slo-mo fraud by many many thousands of people and other businesses who benefit before the dam bursts and as it bursts.
