Times backs Lamont; Wash. Post, Courant, Conn. Post back Lieberman

HARTFORD, Conn. -- U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman earned the endorsement of The Washington Post Sunday in his bid for a fourth term, while The New York Times backed his opponent Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary, criticizing the three-term incumbent for his support of President Bush's national security policies.

The Post commended Lieberman for his ability to work in a bipartisan manner to help advance legislation in Washington, while noting that his support for the war, the galvanizing issue in the race, is a legitimate issue to raise.

"But it seems that Mr. Lieberman is also being pummeled for his ability to work with Republicans and get things done in Washington - also rare traits - and that's a criticism that strikes us as shortsighted even from a partisan Democratic point of view.

Throughout his Senate career, Mr. Lieberman has been faithful to the fundamental values that most Democrats associate with their party...This is a talent and temperament that is helpful to the Democrats in the minority but will be needed even more if there's a change in power in one or both houses of Congress or, in 2008, in the White House. Then, more than ever, the Democratic Party, if it hopes to accomplish anything, will need people such as Mr. Lieberman who bring some civility to an increasingly uncivil capital," The Post wrote.

The most recent Quinnipiac University poll has Lieberman and Lamont in a statistical dead heat heading into the Aug. 8 primary.

Barring an unexpected developement, Ned Lamonot is going to win the DemocRAT primary. The only question right now is whether Republicans can get a viable candidate on the ballot, and so far Alan Schlesinger refuses to withdraw.

The Times editorial was amazing. It read like a post from Kos.

I read the editorial endorsement. They didn't even make a decent argument. The Times is just a leftist political pamphlet. Thank God for the Internet.

Exactly like a post on Kos! The Times is now officially a follower of the rabid Left blogosphere.

Tell me why I am not surprised.

Leftist stupidity is ranked from least to greatest like this:

Daily Kos < Democrat Underground < Huffington Post

The funniest part of the NYT editorial was at the end, when they claim that Lamont "seems smart and moderate".

Surprised we haven't had more discussion threads on this race.

Most CT Republicans want Lieberman to lose, because his going independent will help down-ballot Republicans in congressional and legislative races.

On the other hand, it would be nice for the liberal blogosphere to have their political impotency again demonstrated.

Thoughts?

I'm also torn. What really galls me is that the Republican candidate (Alan Schlesinger) is not viable, but refuses to step aside for a better candidate.

...however (the editors could have continued), the radical single party state advocates aren't interested in that because they believe they will retake the House and Senate in the 2006 elections, impeach the President, and impose an unelected Dhimmicrat strongman. Republicans and conservatives welcome such an irrational course of action.
