QUESTION ABOUT WEIGHTLIFTING(VANITY)
ME | 9-1-06 | ME

Posted on 09/01/2006 7:18:13 AM PDT by JackDanielsOldNo7

I need to ask a question about excercising and weightlifting.

I have been hitting the treadmill for about two months. I have just started light workouts involving lifting weights trying to tone up. I lost about 110 pounds and I want to keep it off.

I have not changed my diet. I am very careful about what I eat.

My question is why am I gaining weight? It is not very much and I could stand to gain a couple of pounds anyway.

Added muscle mass is my guess.

Muscle weighs more than fat.

Are you gaining weight, but keeping the inches off? If so, it is probably added muscle mass.

Your weight gain is probably muscle tissue; your ratio of muscle to fat is most likely shifting.

Muscles are denser that fat. You may slim down but if you add muscle you will actually gain weight. Better to go by how you feel and look rather than what the scale says...

Perhaps you're gaining muscle mass?

Get a bathroom scale that measures %body fat as well as weight. As long as %Fat is going down or stays low, any added weight will be muscle or fluid.

If your cardio rate is too high you stop burning fat. Your body will only burn fat at a lower rate. Also, you might have peaked.

People notice sudden weight lose after cutting out carbs, but the body will adjust and you will stop losing.

Try eating smaller meals more often.

If you lost 110 pounds in two months maybe one of your limbs is starting to grow back.

muscle weighs more than fat.
You are going through a transition and need to patient and stick with the program.

The good news is that the more muscle mass you have the higher your metabolism.

So...if you stick with your cardio - or up it a bit - and keep up with building muscle, you will eventually lose more weight - and it will be fat.

I have been hitting the treadmill for about two months... I lost about 110 pounds.

Two months? My God, man, get OFF the damned treadmill! Go outside and see your family...oh, you don't mean two months straight... ;)

How much time did you spend on the treadmill each day? I've been taking off weight I gained after an operation but it's been sloooooow going. But while my belt size is shrinking I too have gained weight at some points, due to the muscle gain.

What everyone else said (adding muscle, etc). Congratulations on the weight loss. How much time did you spend on the treadmill?

1'st, congratulations on your weight loss.

Now, for your specific question, you are putting on muscle. Muscle is more dense than fat, thus if you put on 5 lbs of muscle, it won't show up too much, but you will feel much better.

That is why weight loss programs that emphasize weight lifting encourage you to pay attention to how your clothes fit instead of what the scale says.

My wife was guilty of that. She would complain that she wasn't "loosing" weight, but I had to point out that her clothes were fitting better, so it must be working.

Check your waist measurements. When I started to work out (weights and cardio) my weight stayed the same, but I did lose a few inches from my waist. Also, have you noticed any big increases in strength so far? Like others have said, it may be muscle mass. Scales can be very misleading. You may also want to see about getting your body fat % measured.

LOL. I lost the weight and have kept it off for two years. I just started excercising religiously.
