You can't talk to parents who are engaging in this kind of behavior. They tend to tell you to mind your own business. Or get violent. If you call child services (and I have) they don't seem to do very much. Teens are usually left in the house unless its a truly horrible situation. Some parents lie their a$$es off to the police or child services and it makes it worse on the kids. My one son I was able to get after he tried to slit his wrists at age 13. Yes it was that bad at his house. Hardly any food and a drunken father and a depressed mother who just was too worn out to care for her kids. My ex husband went over and told the father he was coming with us or he would personally knock the $hit out of him. My ex husband is 6 ft 5 and meant what he said. The mother was put away for depression and I think the father was glad not to have another mouth to feed. I have taken all 3 of his brothers in from time to time too. They would always end up back home because I believe in tough love and zero tolerance if you break house rules. The other one I got because the mother was single, not too bright and left him alone at the age of 6 so she could work nights. I first just took him nights but over the years he just began to stay here until he was fully moved in. I love them both like my own. Both have done well in their lives and the oldest got married, bought a house and has two beautiful children. The newest baby born on my 7 yr old daughters birthday, 10/12 of this year. The other one is trying to start his own business. Both were never legally adopted because the parents wouldn't sign the papers but they ARE my children. I have always had good relationships with my children's friends and many call me mom. I was the mother who always would sit and listen to their problems and always would cook for them. You would be shocked at how many kids ate here over the years. Many I taught table manners as they had none. Holidays here at my house are large as many of these kids didn't even get a holiday meal. Many of these teens are now adults and they still call me and still come for holiday meals

This is one of the weak arguments being used against the Parental Notification proposition that's on the California ballot this year. How convenient it shows up in a Dear Abby column a week before the election.

BINGO

...except for the fact that abortion involves somebody else's body, does it not...and thus how does it differ from any other type of murder...say you wanted to do somebody in because he/she is inconveniencing you...whether they were several months or several decades of age would make all the difference to you...?

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't see how a country can tell a woman what she can do to/with her body.

Simple. It's not just her body anymore.

Thank you. I came from a family that drank and fought much of the time. When I was younger I surely didn't have my act together but as I had children I got it together. At times in my teens I was very jealous of my friend's families so I decided I would always open my heart to any child in need. I have dealt with kids who I couldn't help and that is heartbreaking. My oldest daughter was one of them. With the Grace of God I was able to help these two boys and I feel God gave me a gift of being able to have two more sons. You are indeed lucky to have had such good parents, God Bless them. I am always ready to help anyone who is willing to help themselves. You can't force help on someone who doesn't want it. Nor can you help someone who wants you to do it all for them. That was a lesson hard learned. I truly believe that we are here to help each other.

I agree the letter and its response sound contrived.. but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen, it definately does.

Oh, I am willing to agree that the letter sounds contrived. However, that doesn't mean it doesn't or hasn't happened... Sadly, anyone who works in an ER or child services can tell you it most certainly does.

She's still alive, but her daughter writes her columns now.

This letter is probably a set up. If this father had done this, he would be in jail.

Something's fishy here. I can't imagine a story like that not making the news here. (Sherman Oaks, for those who don't know, is in the San Fernando Valley. It's a very liberal part part of very liberal Los Angeles.) I don't remember any such story. There is, however, a measure on the California ballot this November to require parental notification before a minor can get an abortion. The usual suspects are opposed to it. Methinks that one of those usual suspects is "Shocked and Saddened in Sherman Oaks".

I don't think she's dead (I could be wrong) but she's not writing the column any more - I think it was taken over by her daughter...

I'd be willing to stand on a limb and say that this story is made up BS. While there are probably parents who might do something like this, if this particular "story" was derrived in order to influence the upcoming election and ballot measures, then "Dear Abby" should be yanked from all of the papers that carry her ignorant column.

Dear Abby doesn't give good advice in many cases. I don't read her much as I always thought she was more entertainment. Now I did used to read Dr Joyce Brothers but I never see that anymore. At least I think she was a real DR. but now I am not sure on that either.

Yes, I've been appalled at some of the bad advice given in her column. But, some people must like her as she continues to render these awful opinions.
