The letter, like most of her letters, is fabricated.
Pure BS. I wouldn't put anything past the LA Slimes.
Unfortunately this statement is very true today. It is impossible to watch tv for a week without numerous stories of child death by parents, abuse of wives (and parents), drugs, etc., etc. The biggest drain on state human service budgets throughout the country is having to place children found in meth lab homes into foster care. Up to 50% of those budgets are involved with this type of drug abuse.
To say that the statement is absurd is a reflection on the don't see, don't tell attitude of too many of our population.
As I posted earlier, the reason I think this letter to Dear Abby was a fake is that the teenage girl herself would know her father really may kill her, and wouldn't be taking advice from a friend's mother on this. It is possible, as you wrote, that the mother who (supposedly) wrote the letter would not realize how dangerous her daughter's friend's father is, but, again, the girl herself would know that. Any teenager who comes from a household where one or both parents beats the kids up would visit more normal households and see the difference and know that the more normal people would never understand what chaotic households are like. Teenagers who come from the types of families Abby is ostensibly concerned with would ne unlikely to go to court to get abortions, anyway; they would runaway. The girls who would be organized enough to go to court to get around notifying their parents are most likely to be girls from solid families, girls who do not want to face their parents' disapproval.
When I got to the third sentence I just "knew" this is a fake. Surely Abby (the people who are Abby) didn't fall for it either. This has to be a planned social message. While perusing the paper this morning I was thinking how I never read Dear Abby. Seems like a hundred years ago Ann Landers was more real.
"Fake, but accurate."
Yes. As the Dems like to say, I find the timing very suspicious.
What you failed to take into consideration was the fact that many teens live in homes where there is violence, abuse, drug problems and incest
This statement is just absurd.
Why do you say that? I personally know of teens who were molested by family members and teens who were beaten. One of my adopted sons came from a mother who kept him in the house just so he would get the beatings his drunken father meant for her. Many teens don't talk about their home lives and just try to hold on until they can get out of the home. Many parents do use drugs or drink and get violent. I don't know if it is a true story but I do know from having teenagers that my teens friends didn't always have the best home life. I know of girls who were told to get out when they became pregnant at the age of 16. Why do you think so many teens run away or try to kill themselves or turn to drugs? I know of cases where the mother has smoked pot with her kids and bought them beer. I have seen black and blue marks on girls from their parents. I don't understand why you think it is an absurd statement, it is not. Where do you get your facts that this doesn't happen? You need to take off your rose tinted glasses. I don't believe most of what Abby writes and I don't like her advice much either.
However, this letter doesn't talk about the other side of the issue- girls being coerced into abortions by their older lovers, or by others who want the baby dead. At least parents, even those who would demand their daughter have an abortion upon notification, would almost always have their child's (at least perceived) best interest at heart. A parent is likely to know their child's medical history that would avoid any complications. A parent would be more likely to listen to their daughter if she changes her mind at the clinic. A parent would want an abortion done as safely as possible, even if it cost more money. A parent would be their for their daughter if she need therapy. A parent can step in and work to end the underlying problem that caused the pregnancy in the first place.
A teenage boy or older predator won't do those things. A nurse or other non-related adult does'nt know the children. There is no foolproof solution that covers 100% of life's scenarios, but when it comes to the welfare of children, I am willing to bet on the parents 95%+ of the time.
Pure propaganda. Will the writer ever be called on this lie? My guess is a resounding "no".
BTW, as other posters have pointed out, "Dear Abby" passed away and the baton has been handed down to her daughter, I think. It's always nice to keep the lies going on in the tradition of the family.
She also said the only people who used the Internet were insane. Said she never used a computer. Yet, she had her own website.
I took it that it was being inferred that this is a common thing, I don't agree with that.
I guess he should have simply said "speak for yourself, weirdo" then.
No one has any moral clarity any longer. No matter what the excuse, even....but it wasn't his/her fault....but we don't want to offend them in case they want to believe the gospel....but everyone is a sinner....and on and on Moral clarity first. Then give hope and a road out.
I don't mean to be rude, but I don't see how a country can tell a woman what she can do to/with her body. Probably the humane thing to do would be to develop a pill that does the deed of a wire hanger. This topic should be completely off every politician's mind.
So call me an @$$hole for my opinion, it's not going to change it.
My thoughts exactly.
I don't believe this for one bit.
Her daughtrer is answering the letters.
No, he is normally out of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan, Turkey, Indonesia...close to nowhere, but not out of nowhere.
