Twenty-eight years after his first campaign, George W. Bush is waging his last. If the polls are right, the president could wind up experiencing the sting of defeat for the first time since that 1978 race.
Most of the winning campaigns in between have been close, and Bush's victories have hinged in part on his flair for retail politicking that allows him to make personal connections with voters.
But the war in Iraq has driven Bush's popularity down to a point where he has had to avoid major public events and instead has appeared almost exclusively with party elites.
Still, Bush refuses to accept the conventional wisdom in Washington that Republicans might lose the House and perhaps even the Senate. He cuts off questions about the impact of a Democratic takeover and insists Republicans are going to win.
"This election is going to be determined by how our candidates run locally. And I believe if they continue to emphasize the big issues keeping taxes low and protecting the American people we'll win," Bush said Friday.
He is doing what he can to help make that happen and certainly has more impact on the race than any other politician.
Bush has raised more than $193 million at about 90 events this election season. He has posed with dozens of smiling candidates on the steps of Air Force One. He has picked pumpkins with a candidate who admitted to marital infidelity...
Although Bush's fate is not at stake, the last two years of his term and his legacy is. Democratic control of Congress would surely hasten his lame-duck status.

Wait just a minute here. I thought the "conventional wisdom" (there's an oxymoron) was that Pres. Bush was toxic - TOXIC! - to Republican candidates, and here he is, raising bazillions of dollars and posting for photos with them?? What the heck?
PRickler alert.
Actually Nedra Pickler is a very good looking woman.
And in her earlier days with AP she was remarkably factual and decent in her reporting. There was a left-wing website that was watching her closely and piling up a list of politically incorrect articles, probably in hopes of getting her fired.
I suspect her bosses at AP must have called her into the office and told her to move left or ship out. Even now, she's not as bad as many of the other AP staffers.
I wish I could find that picture of her without the pickle outfit. As I said, she's very good looking and seemingly intelligent. What she needs is some bosses who will let her do her job as she is very capable of doing it, instead of making her follow the propaganda rules.
Possible losses? I thought a Dem victory tidal wave was assured, with only a handful of token Republicans allowed to remain in DC.
GWB's last campaign? Won't he be working for the Republican trying to succeed him in 2008?
Heck, he might return home to Crawford, TX and run for School Board. Who knows?
I know this, if we do pull this one out and hold onto both Houses, it will be THE devastating blow to the Dems. If they can't win this year, in this political climate, there will be an increase in suicide attempts in D.C.
"If they can't win this year, in this political climate, there will be an increase in suicide attempts in D.C."
"This political climate" as you referred to it, is the product of many things.
The President
The members of congress' majority party
The opponents
The media
The public sentiment
Republicans, individually and as a party, need to make handling the media a higher priority.
Here's a picture of her, in the middle of the back row, with a group of friends hiking along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Can't see very much of her, I'm afraid.
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is a well-known Commie organization. /s
Yeah, I noticed that one, too. The Prez has had huge turnouts with pumped up, screaming audiences. The base is spoiling for a fight. I don't sense defeat in the air at all. The number of party volunteers is up. All kinds of money is being raised. I have heard reports that absentee ballots by Republicans are far outpacing the Dems. People don't get excited if they think they have no chance of winning. I don't believe these ridiculous polls and I certainly don't believe the chattering chumps or doomsaying Republican turncoats like that horse's arse Joe Scarred Burro.
