Pretty good guess for a "yankee". :o)

Hehehe!  Thank you  :-)

I was born a Yankee Northerner but my heart has always been in the South   :-)

"Does it matter if he was a Christian or not????"

For you, apparently not. However, for God, it's a significant "square filler."

I remember him from the good old TechTV days, one thing you could always tell was that he loved his family dearly.

I am a bit frustrated by those (not referencing anyone on this site, but comments I have read on others) criticizing him for his decision to leave the car. All I see is a man who, seeing that help did not seem to be coming, took it upon himself to try to save his family. In my opinion, he did what any loving man should do in that situation and did not rely on the government or outside sources and attempted to get help for his wife and kids. Those who criticize him could just as easily be telling a different story if it was not for whatever providence came upon the rescuers who found Kati and the childern.

As one poster above said, he died a man and a hero and it is a shame that he probably never knew that his family was safe. There is comfort in knowing that his heroism will be able to live on in the hearts of his wife and kids, who will at least be able to one day understand the sacrifice that he made for them.

Listening to a LAFD SAR in Griffith Park right now....two FLIR helos and a bunch of ground units. Jogger missing up near Beachwood Cyn Stables.

Heard one pilot say that if you have a cell phone, if you open the clamshell and wave it around, they can pick that up on the FLIR very good.

jacque - we all care. And maybe you really do. But perhaps next time, you will think it over before posting that victims of a tragedy had ulterior motives. It never hurts to toss aside initial negative thoughts when you have no idea that is the case instead of putting them out for the world to see.

Looks like we have some new high tech skills to learn to use if we are lost.

BTW ... pretty cold here in town lately. I have been waking up about 30 minutes early and running to turn on the thermostat. Brrr ...

Daybreak, just what part of hoping for an alternative explanation that promises a more postive outcome don't you and the others comprehend?

I didn't consider that a initial negative thought, but trying to see through a glass darkly. I guess my mind just doesn't work the "right" way.

I still would have preferred my scenario to the way it turned out, because I do care. And, there are lots of people like me around, who just can't get their head around the idea that this intelligent couple could get themselves in such a dangerous situation. That may be my age, as some have suggested.

Here is a link to another forum. Perhaps it will help some of you understand a "prepper's point of view".

........ I suggest now though that those on this thread who are knowlegeable outdoorsman make some lists we can all print off so we can be prepared in case of traveling in remote areas - as a lot of us to from time to time. - Any suggestions will be welcome . . .

Re remote areas, the lists of items already submitted by posters to this thread are great, but customizing your emergency kit for your particular location and updating it seasonally and prior to specific trips are tasks worth considering....this also insures that date-sensitive items are removed and replaced as they approach expiration and also insures that the contents of the kit remain fresh in your mind and that they remain usable.

Tossing a flashlight and extra batteries (and bulbs!) into your jump kit and then storing it in your trunk, untouched, for five years will insure that it will be useless when needed, and moldy consumables are worse than having nothing at all because you are all the while thinking that they are there and usable in case of need.

I'm assuming that everyone already is aware of the various FEMA publications and videos:

FEMA Are You Ready

Basic First Aid courses should be considered a minimum for everyone, and regular proficiency updates and refreshers are essential.

Having recent wilderness medicine and survival courses under your belt before you venture out will make the local Park Ranger beam with joy and will help you to have a better time because you will have a greater understanding of your abilities and your limitations.

Don't just buy a big box of emergency supplies and equipment without understanding EXACTLY how to use them.  Yes, you have your nifty SAM splint in case somebody breaks their leg, but are you aware of all of the different ways it can be used?  And the ways that it SHOULDN'T be used?

Is that a good enough physics explanation?

Whether the hole is lined with plastic or whether it isn't, any water put into it, in an ambient temperature of 15 degrees F, is going to become a block of ice.

Unless I'm missing some special qualities that holes possess.

Man, I wish people would quit spreading that myth around. When I say "bless your heart," I mean it with all my heart or I don't say it.

I have written it many times to FReepers who are hurting or suffering and I'll be damned if y'all are going to try to make it into something bad and make those people now avoid me like the plague because they feel I've insulted them.

I haven't. "Bless your heart" means I'm sorry as heck that you're having a hard time and I hope that God blesses you and makes it better. That's what it means.

I've never known anybody to say it and mean what y'all said here, except comedians on TV, mean girls in high school, and yankees using it wrong.

Excellent link, it is so much more useful than this one has been, I like this woman's attitude.

Hi PSYCHO-FREEP:

Burning car tires (such as the easily-accessed spare) emits plumes of thick, black, and acrid smoke. If one is trapped in their car and it won't be driving anywhere, it makes sense to sacrifice the spare if one thinks it will help them to be spotted by aircraft. The tires likely weren't burned for warmth, they were burned as a signal.

Hi Madeleine Ward-

People in the end stages of hypothermia do bizarre things and are often found semi-nude in the snow. He likely removed his pants because he thought he was hot or that his legs were burning. It's a sad, peculiar, and unfortunate trick the brain plays upon someone who is freezing to death.

put the snow in what to melt it?

A fender from the car would work nicely. Or some part from under the hood...maybe the air breather.

"any other suggestions"

A tomahawk and a knife. They should have cut out the rug, ripped out the plastic around the doors and built a fire next to and under the car a bit. They had baby bottles and sippy cups. The hawk and knife could have been used to make pots out of the fenders.
