Whether the hole is lined with plastic or whether it isn't, any water put into it, in an ambient temperature of 15 degrees F, is going to become a block of ice.

Not if you drink it first. But, the hole is the container in which to put the snow for melting. Snow in hole + heated rocks from fire = water. How fast the melted water in the hole becomes ice depends on a lot of things. If the ground temp is warmer than the air temp, the meltings remain liquid longer than they would in a container exposed to air temp.

As the water is consumed, more snow added, lowers temp. But then one would continue to add heated stones. And, it would make sense to cover the 'reservoir' with something--car mat, heated rock...& pile on 'insulation'--loose pine needles, etc.

It is a myth that the term is always a putdown. It's not.

Of course, everyone can tell by your typing inflection which is which, right?

"Pardon me, I forgot. Only Christians have exclusive access to Heaven."

==============

That would be accurate

1 John 5:11-12

11And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.,
12He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Hey, I know you, aren't you on the city council in Arcata?

Them's fightin words boy! But I was at the Eureka City Council meeting Tues night telling them not to act like the city of arcata.

I don't know if it's been said but we should all be Thankful that only 1 searcher was injured. Flying that many helicopters in that area is very hazardous and hiking over wet cold rocks is tricky.

We have lost Coast Guard Helio crews out of Humboldt Bay when they fly in bad weather or good. Just this year one went in the surf while rescuing a couple of fishermen. The Coasties got out alive...

I read your original comments.

You prefaced your concern about a possible 'hoax' with words like "IF" so that a person reading it could tell you were not making accusations, but merely considering the alternatives and being open and honest about it.

You have nothing to apologize for, IMHO.

Had it turned out that it was a hoax for profit/fame, in what is anymore mostly a world of the blind, you would have been declared the One-eyed KING!

Thanks for the links. My husband and I travel quite often on very remote roads in the Smokies in the winter, and also in other remote areas. . so, we need to do more preparation. We have a bunker at home in case of a disaster, but our van isn't optimum.

I read often where people suggest mostly things like candy for an emergency bag. If people are stranded for days or weeks, those little hard candies could begin to look sort of skimpy. Not everyone likes sardines, kippers, high nutrition bars and things like that, but if one gets hungry enough, they are cheap, compact and very densely nutritious.

A couple of clothing items that come to mind. I've heard that one loses a huge amount of body heat through the top of the head, so a heavy toboggan and scarf or other would be a good idea to have in the car in winter traveling. Also, mittens instead of gloves, because in mittens, the fingers are kept together and hold more warmth inside the mittens than gloves.

Also, just an idea - a big red "X" cut from colored plastic and folded in an emergency kit could be used to place on top of the car (or on the ground nearby), especially in the snow, where it would be easy to spot from the air by searchers. Any other ideas?

I know if it had been me out there and I still had tires to burn I would have been using them to start larger fires of wet logs and green branches, and my excursions would be mainly to fuel those fires.

He must have thought he was close enough to a traveled road to chance it.

When we lived in Wisconsin, we traaveled with lots of survival supplies in the trunk, snow shovel, folding shovel, flares, food, blankets, etc.

Wherever you travel it is always wise to remember that you may have to walk out. And it may take some time.

Pack accordingly.....

Oh FGS - is your life so empty that you have become obsessed with "bless your heart"?

If you have any reading comprehension at all, you read that there are two definitions of "bless your heart". I'll go further and draw you a picture. There is the "bless your heart" I say to my children. Then there is the "bless your heart" that you say to someone who is behaving/speaking in a low trash manner and you do not want to lower yourself to their level.

Of course, everyone can tell by your typing inflection which is which, right?

The poster who I was responding to knew. Why you decided to make it your cause, I have no idea.

Now, bless your heart and go away.

I am not ready to say two years of slavery are necessary for learning survival skills.

Draft=slavery
;enlisting is the choice of a free person.

Why not? We force kids to go to school for twelve years so what's another two years at a different kind of school?

War of 1812 was fought because the British impresed(forced into service" American sailors.

Forced schooling is an admission of incompetence on the part of the educational system.

"I will admit that I have witnessed many odd behavior patterns in people
under such stress."

Years ago I got a copy of "Outside" magazine with an article on surviving the cold.

It started off with the story (maybe apochryphal?) about a bush pilot that
was forced down in very bad, very cold weather.
As best the search party that found his plane in a day or so could tell,
the pilot survived the landing in good health.
Then he apparently walked around the damaged plane a couple of times.
And proceeded to relieve any anxiety about whether he'd survive the
storm by putting a bullet in his head.
It turned out he landed a mile or two from a modest village.

I've often stopped to think of that story when I've been under stress.

On days like today, I just try to look away; we have people trashing this man, people trashing Mary Cheney

Don't equate this fine man with Mary Cheney whatsoever. One was a fine person, the other not.

I only care about what God thinks.

God thinks? So he was made in OUR image, then? He's like a person? Oh. Thanks.

I hear you and I too keep a few things like a heavy coat and canteen etc

Its the people like Kim out on a trip and make a wrong turn in a storm who suffer the worst many times.

No, we were made in his image. We think, therefore he thinks.
