"The genius of the American proposal was its insistence on a state (in other words governmental) secularism that guarantees religious freedoms, including atheism, in a pluralist society." I kind of liked this line. It reflects the inconvenient truth (take that Algore) that America is a Christian country that is fundamentally tolerant of other religions. Much ill derives from a failure to recognize this fact.

I found this very interesting. I do not, however, understand what the author refers to in this sentence:
"The importance of understanding, and conserving, that historic experiment could not be more urgent today as President George W Bush attempts to hijack the protective neutrality of Americas state secularism with evangelical convictions."If there have been attempts on the part of the President to "hijack" anything with evangelical convictions, I have missed it entirely.

I thought it was an interesting article...
...The genius of the American proposal was its insistence on a state (in other words governmental) secularism that guarantees religious freedoms, including atheism, in a pluralist society.
The importance of understanding, and conserving, that historic experiment could not be more urgent today as President George W Bush attempts to hijack the protective neutrality of Americas state secularism with evangelical convictions...
...but he lost me there.

Worthwhile read.
Good points. Don't agree 100% with every sentence but a good read.
Thanks.

More telling . . . how many angelic hosts does Dawkins have?
Or, in terms of the old joke . . .

Remember this guy is a European, and if he gets his news about America from their MSM, he probably thinks the President has been kidnapped and held hostage by Jerry Falwell.

Sadly, there are many divisions and battalions that agree with Prof Dawkins. Most of academia, the arts, the media, to name a few.
Hmmm...aren't these made up of people who think they're smarter than the common masses? I mean, whoever heard of a humble, unassuming atheist?
Not Prof Dawkins, he's one of the three smartest people in the world. If you don't believe it, read the intro!
To: Quix
Don't you know that you are required to agree with 100% of everything in the article otherwise it's all complete nonsense.

Me, too. The Supreme Court has actively promoted America's state secularism as a mandated state religion.
