I guess you could say that Ann loves to shock us, but at this point, who’s shocked? She obviously can’t behave well enough to attend a respectable political gathering. It’s not a lack of intelligence. It’s an indifference to self-control and a preening sort of narcissism that compels her to need the spotlight, even if it’s unflattering.

(For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s audio of her calling John Edwards a “faggot” at CPAC today.)

Ann Coulter just finished her riff on Al Gore, tossed out some cute jokes ("You can understand why Hollywood is concerned about global warming. You know what heat does to plastic."), and ended with a cheap one-liner about John Edwards being a "faggot." (Paraphrasing) She said she would refrain from commenting on Edwards because "if you say faggot, you have to go to rehab."

A smattering of laughter.

Ann Coulter is speaking at CPAC as I write. As is typical, she gave a brief speech full of her usual witticisms, including a few brilliant attacks on Al Gore’s green hypocrisy. All was good. Untill the last few seconds, when she launched into a joke about John Edwards.

Here’s what she said.

“I’d say something about John Edwards, but if you say ‘faggot’ you have to go to rehab.”

I’m no fan of John Edwards, but that’s just a stupid joke. It’s over the line. The laughter it generated across the room was more than a little annoying.

Last year it was “raghead.” This year it’s calling John Edwards a “faggot.” Two years in a row, Coulter has finished up an otherwise sharp CPAC routine with an obnoxious slur that liberals will fling at conservatives for years to come.

My comments... what should have been a day to celebrate a Reaganesque speech by Duncan Hunter, and good speeches by Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee was overshadowed by an unhinged comment by Ann Coulter. She is an absolute idiot for saying something like this at CPAC.

Ann's never been my cup of tea, but one of the things that'll give me a headache the fastest is every time "progressives" trot out the old "hate-speech" routine for one more dance.

There are two things I hate about the word "hate-speech". First, it's a meaningless catch phrase progressives use when they can't argue ideas, which is often, and want to discredit their opponent without thinking too hard. I've seen everything from support for the war to arguments for tax reform branded "hate speech" for no other reason than it didn't conform to leftist ideology.

Secondly, if you want to know the left's plan for "hate-speech", just look at your local university's campus speech code. Progressives believe that "hate-speech" should not be protected by the First Amdendment. Believe me, if we allow the Democrats to regain full control of the Federal government, you can expect to eventually see hate speech legislation, which will give them carte blanche to restrict any political speech that they think is dangerous to crating their new socialist utopia. Do YOU want to rely on the Supreme Court to tell them that's unconstitutional?

Ann is frustrated that conservatives continue to play by the Queen of what's-her-name rules of debate. This correlates with the gradual decline in support the Republicans have gotten since 1994 and culminated with their 2006 mid-term defeat.

We have the winning issues on our side. The days of fighting liberal lies with stoic emails and statements are over. We need emotion, some knee-jerk conservatism if you will, in order to win over people and recapture control of government.
