Up to 350 in custody after New Bedford immigration raid
Boston Globe ^ | March 6, 2007 | Yvonne Abraham

An army of 300 federal immigration agents raided a New Bedford leather manufacturer today and arrested the company's owner and three managers on charges that they hired illegal workers to meet labor demands fueled by millions of dollars in contracts with the US military.

During the early morning blitz, agents also took into custody up to 350 employees who had been working at Michael Bianco Inc., a waterfront factory that employs about 500 people, predominantly immigrants from Guatemala and El Salvador. Some employees fled when agents stormed the building, and helicopters hovered overhead to alert authorities of escape routes, said Corinn Williams, executive director of the Community Economic Development Center in New Bedford, which has been fielding calls from worried immigrants.

Remember when the Flyers beat the crap out of the Russians? Bobby Clarke nailed this guy in front of the Flyers net and he went down like..well, a Montreal Canadian on home ice. The Russians left the ice...oh I miss the Cold War.

Yes, I have that 1976 Flyers-Soviets' game on a DVD; however, it was Ed Van Impe who sparked the controversy against Kharlamov in that game. Clarke's "offense" was against Kharlamov in the 1972 Canada Cup.

I hate to clue you in, but these people were doing productive work as are most of the 20 million you mentioned.

Eliminating 20 million people who are doing productive work may not produce the results you had in mind.

Be careful what you wish for.

Does this mean that the military isn't gonna get the leather contracts fulfilled? Another attack on our troops.

We should normalize their status...and get rid of the minimum wage at least for legal and (new)law abiding foreign workers.

No problem. Just another GIANT HIT for the U.S. taxpayer. Thank you Washington, DC for your malfeasance and politically-motivated incompetence.

"US Attorney Michael J. Sullivan called the working conditions at the factory "horrible" at a press conference today in Boston."

Read right past that part, eh?

How do you know what those 20 million are doing? These particular ones were working for a company with a military contract. Not only are they illegally trespassing, they're a security risk.

Another clue, there's no reason why a US citizen couldn't do these jobs.
