[history]
Did you know that in New York City, through 1969 virtually all the public high schools had riflery teams?
Thousands of students carried their rifles on subways, buses and streets on their way to school, when they went to practice in the afternoon and on their way home. And until 1963, all commercial pilots were required to carry guns and were allowed to carry guns until 1987.

At least six colonies required people to have guns with them at church. Church officials were required to check parishioners when they arrived for services to ensure they had a gun. Clergymen were required to have guns, too....

In our day, only about 45 percent of households own a gun, whereas gun ownership in Colonial America was much higher, as measured by probate records. Guns were bequeathed to the next generation in about 70 percent of cases. .

towns such as Kennesaw, Ga., Greenfeld, Idaho and Geuda Springs, Kan., which all require residents to own gunsI'd be curious to know what the crime rate is in those towns. Probably lower than, say, D.C.

Well, you can either allow people to own guns to protect themselves, or you can try to do the job for them by hiring 55,000 police.
I wouldn't call the 2nd choice "limited-government fiscal conservatism", but some do.
One thing is sure -- if you hire more police than the next 4 largest city police forces in the country COMBINED, you can get your crime rate slightly lower than those other cities.

Guns were bequeathed to the next generation in about 70 percent of cases. Further, ownership was almost certainly even higher than such records would suggest. Consider: would the number of four-function calculators appearing in probate records be higher in 1966 or 2006?

If a butter knife is found in your backpack, you get suspended.
I read one story where a little girl was suspended for a plastic water pistol.

I was on my high school rifle team, in the 70's, and as far as I know the rifle team still existed in the 80's. I don't suppose it is still there, though. We stored the rifles at the school (the school-owned ones anyway) and carried them all around the campus and back and forth to the range which was at the local Guard armory.
Nobody ever thought anything of it.

Thanks. A friend of mine told me that the HK P2000sk is what Jack Bauer carries. The P2000sk is the compact version of my P2000.
