Before I even begin, please refrain from the patent pending "what do you expect if you live in California" crap. I expect to live as an American just like you.
Two things have happened over the last year that have really spoken to me. I live at the foot of the Reagan Library. It's a conservative area. Votes GOP in nearly every election. Average income in the low $80K.
The first thing was at a Vons store. A gigantic black green beret was behind me in line. I mention his race and size only because in Simi Valley there are very few Gigantic (and I'm talking huge) black green berets buying oatmeal in Vons. In fact, Simi is pretty white bread. I said, "you go ahead, I have a lot." He kindly refused. I insisted. So he went ahead. The person in front of him insisted he go ahead as well. Then the person in front of that person insisted until the soldier was at the front of the line. He put down his purchases (oatmeal and fruit) and the checker rang him up. Two people raced across the store to scan their own debit cards to pay for his purchases. Hand shakes and thank yous all around. Makes me cry to think of it.
Friday morning I pull into a gas station. I'm in my pj's because I have minor surgery that day and am taking my 16 year old daughter to school. I put the pump into the tank and start the machine. A man comes up behind me and says, "so, how's that vote working for you". I respond, "I beg your pardon?" He says, "your vote, your bumper sticker (Bush Cheney 2004). How's that working for you?" "It's working just fine, thank you," I said and turned away. "You Bushbots are all the same. You don't want to hear the truth. Now people are dying over there," he YELLED. "People died under Clinton, too, pal, in fact had he finished the job instead of getting a "job" in the oval office, we wouldn't have had to go back," I retorted. I turned back to my car and he grabbed my shoulder and turned me around. "Take your hands off me," I said. "There were no weapons of mass destruction and Bush lied....." he started until I shook his hand off my shoulder. "You attack a 50 year old woman in her pajamas at a gas station over a bumpersticker. That's pretty damn low even for a liberal," I said. "What?" he said, "I was only asking you a question."
At this point my daughter starts out of the car going "mooommmm???" (She's a red belt) "Get back in the car," I told her. Then I got in the car, too and we started to leave. As I was leaving he was standing in the gas station yelling "Sieg Heil" and giving me the Nazi salute.
I got a picture of his license plate and filed a complaint at the gas station and at the police station.
Seems the Constitution only applies if you're a liberal. My blood pressure was so high when I got to the hospital they wouldn't even operate. But if the police find this man, he's getting a lesson in civil and criminal court.
Does that even require a response or have you not noticed the bulk of the political persuasion of public school teachers (or university professors) ? Conservatives need not apply.
Well, I hope the cops do something about it. I'm sure if you called up your local tv station and explained a non-White liberal anti-war protester was assaulted by a Bush supporter they'd be more than happy to do a headline piece, but then if you changed that around to tell them the actual persuasion of the attacker they'd tell you you were asking for it and hang up on you. C'est la vie.
I'll tell you, folks don't really know what discrimination is in the 21st century unless you're a Conservative (and depending upon the modifier, Black-, Jewish-, etc., it gets progressively worse for you).
As I said, I hope you nail the SOB, and sue for damages (surely both you and your doctor were out $$ for having to postpone your surgery, which would've gone off without a hitch had this assault and confrontation never happened).
You shoulda picked another locale to nuke. France is almost too gratuitous, y'know. I'd suggest nuking San Fran or Berkeley, but I have family in both places. D'oh !

I laid a hand on a woman in a minor traffic dispute and she siced the police on me. It never came to much only because she didn't pursue it.

I will personally give you permission to claim that you have Jewish heritage (hell, anybody running for President on the DNC side has some). Thus, the nazi salute is not an additional 'hate crime' which is a Federal Offense. I'd be happy to coach you on how traumatic it was for you to have to relive all those horrible memories (just like John Edwards would channel unborn childred in court to scam juries into taking millions from ob/gyns).

I recommend the same for you. We both have "obvious" NRA stickers on the rear windows of our cars implying that we are armed and ready. So far we have been blessed with no major problems, but I have had a gun in my hand more than once in the past year with some obvious threats who have backed down when I made clear what I was going to do.
I hope you will take the time to learn how to handle a gun. I pray that it is a waste of time and you never need to use one. All the best to you and good luck.
"Sieg Heil" must be this week's liberal talking points - the local liberal at work was braying the same BS. In fact, two weeks ago, he was foaming at the mouth about the very same issues. Sounds like moveon.org has the loonies all foaming at the mouth.

I would have had fun with the guy. I would have said "Well what's a nice enlightened liberal like you doing in a gas station? Don't you know that every gallon of gas you buy supports the Bush/Halliburton war machine? What would Al Gore think? Why don't you guys buy some bicycles and practice what you preach instead of polluting our environment with these fossil fuels?"
Somehow I want to know about a follow-up on this. Please follow through with all legal action, complaints and so forth that you can. This guy is crazy and he needs some consequences. Do it!
No, no, that's not quite what I meant. I'm just saying for whatever Republican voters in a rodent Presidential state, their vote counts for zero in the Electoral College. It was my state, TN, that counted for 11 votes. Blaming a Republican voter in a state that went rodent is ludicrous. Remember, by California standards, the assaulter-kook's side won (just not nationally). That last part is a scarier thought for those that dare live in that state.
