Statement says chancellor, Erwin Chemerinsky pledge to adhere to 'principle of academic freedom' in founding law school.

IRVINE – UCI has rehired law professor Erwin Chemerinsky as the dean of its fledgling law school, after UCI Chancellor Michael Drake flew to North Carolina to meet with him over the weekend.

Both men pledged in a statement that "Our new law school will be founded on the bedrock principle of academic freedom," in a Monday morning announcement about the hiring.

Is Chemerinsky going to continue to represent Guantanamo detainees while acting as Dean of UCI’s law school?

Good. Eliminating someone for ideological reasons is ridiculous unless it is brought into the classroom.

Ethical Constitutional attorneys could not make a living unless people like Irwin were screwing up the nation with their liberal sophism.

Chemerinsky exhibits the behavior that has led to our nation having a "legalities" system instead of a justice system. Goor for UCI, they will provide a good living for ethical attorneys.....while the rest of us foot the bill.

“Our new law school will be founded on the bedrock principle of academic freedom,”

This is generally Newspeak for absolute intolerance of Christianity, patriotism and anything even remotely perceived as politically incorrect. Students with unpopular views will be flunked, harassed and disciplined unless they keep their mouths shut, and pay homage to the god of diversity, hate, and ideological facism.

This guy is free to do what he wants and we’re free to express the opinion that his views would better fit those found in Middle-Eastern nations. I don’t see a problem with that.

If he doesn’t like it here, he should find a job in a nation more to his liking.

As for his students, I help pay this bastards salary and as far as I am concerned, he isn’t qualified.

“academic freedom” is PC speak meaning the “academic”; i.e., the professor, has absolute freedom, while the students, the Board of Regents, the taxpayer (who foots the bill) can go pound sand.

The general public believes that “academic freedom” conveys freedom of speech at the academy. The reality is that only the “academics” get freedom of speech. If you don’t believe it, then try being a conservative student or faculty member at one of these institutions that embrace “academic freedom”.

UCI Regents are idiots. Last year they refused to be held accountable in millions of dollars that seem to disappear in perks and benefits.

They clearly don’t know how to run this institution which is why the medical facilities have ground to nothing.

You don't get to write the qualifications for that job fortunately. I'm quite certain that professor has the necessary academic, research, and experience necessary to fill that job. I prefer Robert Bork's judicial philosophy but don't think that just because someone has different views than me doesn't mean they can't be fair arbitors and do a good job establishing a law school.

Chemerinski is a far-Left ideologue who will hire only like-minded individuals. Check back in five years and you will see I’m Right.

Tell that to the family and friends of the victims of those held at Guantanamo and their compatriots. I’m sure the tens of thousands of them would hang on your every word.

Use your sophestry on someone who will buy into it. You’re wasting your time on me.

I said a number of things that were true. You’re just selective in your acknowledgments of truth. I can live with that.

I'm confused. Your tagline says that the Duke professors who came out against the Duke lacrosse players should be fired and yet you think it is impermissible for UCI to take a pass on someone who wants to extend the Bill of Rights to cover the detainees being held at Guantanamo. Is that really what you think?
