Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

Fred said he will quit if not placing in top two.

I don't do this very often, but...

I flat don't believe your statement and challenge you to produce a reliable source. Go ahead, make me eat crow!

Oops. Here's the first paragraph:

AMES, IOWA -- Saying he plans to make no changes to his campaign, Fred Thompson asserted today that he needs a strong finish in Iowa caucuses. “I need to come in second,” he said. “We’re going to continue to see a lot of people between now and then.”

McCain will challenge Fred..unfortunately.

Hell Col, I'm more comfortable with McCain than Mitt, Huck or Rudy. The devil you know maybe.

I will be caucusing for Fred tomorrow night. I have not answered polling calls except 2. The first poll said it was paid for by Ron Paul at the end. The second poll only asked if I was voting for Huckabee, Romney. or McCain and appeared to be a push poll against Romney. I refuse to answer any more polls. I suspect there are many undetected votes for Fred in the polling.

I'm with you. I think Fred's support is underestimated in the polls. Thank you for going to caucus for Fred. Iowa is so crucial to the future of the race and you do all FRedheads and your country a great service by supporting him tomorrow.

I don’t have a thing to add to this thread, but it makes me happy.

I am seriously praying for Thompson, and I encourage others to do, also.

(Giving money won’t hurt, either! I think I might get some sort of limited edition picture or something.)

By an amazing coincidence, I just heard from a Huckabee supporter a confident prediction that Fred Thompson will totally withdraw from the Presidential race within 2-3 weeks. I think the more I hear from the “preacher” (or his staff) the less I trust him.

I agree with you in the sense that he can lead green suitors.

Bannie, do you have one of those neat faces for Romey or Huckablunder? I guess you’d need the broken halo for Huckles and that magic undergarments for the Romnillian

Here is the entire piece from CBS News ( he did not say he would quit if he didn't finish second):
Thompson: "I Need to Come in Second"

AMES, IOWA -- Saying he plans to make no changes to his campaign, Fred Thompson asserted today that he needs a strong finish in Iowa caucuses. “I need to come in second,” he said. “We’re going to continue to see a lot of people between now and then.”

To finish second in Iowa, Thompson has a lot of ground to make up. While Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are both polling in the 27 to 28 percent range, Thompson is neck and neck with John McCain at around 11 percent. When asked if he would stay in the race if he finished third, he said “I’m not going to talk about things like that.”

He did talk about the consistency of his presidential run. “Let the political world swirl around me and let everyone run their attack ads and spend their money and spin their wheels and all that,” he said. “But I’m going to be the same. It’s worked for me pretty well in my career, being Fred, and I’m going to continue to be Fred.”

If my recollection is correct, the first time Clinton ran he came out of Iowa in third. Thompson just needs to show decently in Iowa. The winner in Iowa does not become the Party’s nominee all that often :-)

Ed Rollins released Hucks ad any way through a subordinate.

Huck's campaign had already distributed the ad to television outlets for broadcast, then broadcasted it themselves in front of reporters from a hundred media outlets. No one but the Huckster released it.
