Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

It’s all about the Mo. Huckabee could finish ahead of Thompson, but if he is seen as sinking, then it could be a very different picture when it comes to South Carolina.

a 4 point gain is good, but I think it’s too little too late to make him even a close third. It might keep him from finishing 4th to John McCain at least, which could keep him alive to fight another day, but nothing revolutionary enough to shake up the race any.

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….

I only had minor reservations about Fred Thompson until I saw the behavior of some of his most zealous supporters on Free Republic.

Nobody is going to bother with any of your posts until you provide a source for your #10 post that claimed Fred said he’d quit if he didn’t place in the top two.

Fred will NOT finsh top 3.

No candidate in the modern caucus/primary era (since 1972)to not do so has ever gone on to win the nomination.

Excellent comments from David Limbaugh. I agree with him wholeheartedly. It is refreshing to see and hear a man not puffed up with his own importance and thinking more of the country than his personal benefits. Go Fred.

Did you see LisaFab’s post???

Thompson: “I Need to Come in Second”
AMES, IOWA — Saying he plans to make no changes to his campaign, Fred Thompson asserted today that he needs a strong finish in Iowa caucuses. “I need to come in second,” he said. “We’re going to continue to see a lot of people between now and then.”

To finish second in Iowa, Thompson has a lot of ground to make up. While Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are both polling in the 27 to 28 percent range, Thompson is neck and neck with John McCain at around 11 percent. When asked if he would stay in the race if he finished third, he said “I’m not going to talk about things like that.”

He did talk about the consistency of his presidential run. “Let the political world swirl around me and let everyone run their attack ads and spend their money and spin their wheels and all that,” he said. “But I’m going to be the same. It’s worked for me pretty well in my career, being Fred, and I’m going to continue to be Fred.”

What does ‘I need to come in Second’ mean? How about if Fred does not come in second, what does he need to do??
It is OBVIOUS.

He has gone the way of other non conservative phoneys trying to sell their freaking snake oil to conservatives that can see through the silly spin they spew.
Rooty is putting his silly hope on Feb 5th. Forget about Rooty , Huck and all the phoneys, we are not buying into your single issue BS.

Well, I’m not comfortable with Mitt, Huck, or Rudy.....or McCain either. With respect to the first three, inconsistent positions put me off, and I don’t trust any of them. As for McCain, his consistent positions (anti-GOP; anti-conservative) eliminate him from consideration.

If I wanted a candidate who was anti-tax cut, pro-CFR, pro-amnesty, and a Global Warming nutcase, I could just vote dimocrat.
