Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

Lies.

What is wrong with YOU?

Why do you have to lie?

will continue to slam Fred’s campaign until he turns it around and makes it about national security and his immaculate credentials.

You are all wrong here. Just go to http://www.fred08.com/ and watch "Fred's message to Iowa voters". It's the first subject he touches on.

“Fred said he will quit if not placing in top two.

I think you made this up. Thompson campaign staff tell me that his strategy for winning the nomination includes getting third in Iowa.

If you can't, shut up.

LOL! Or as Duke Santos (Cesar Romero) put it in Ocean's 11:

SANTOS: So if you can't put up, what do you do?

CASINO OWNER: Shut up. And that's what I'm doing.

SANTOS: Good.

Thompson/Ensign - the lady’s ticket. More arousal than Clinton - Bill that is.

#5 in a 5 person race sure looks like last place to me.

What “lies” are you accusing me of?

Should have guessed. You’re a newbie, but you have a right to YOUR opinion. Don’t try to get lies past the FReepers in here. They are a lot smarter than you are and ever will be.

Ignore it, Fred is not dropping out no matter the outcome in Iowa. He just submitted his corrected paperwork for Texas today.

This thing is far from over.

“A 17 minute closing argument web video for Iowa? You gotta be %@$!*& kidding me! And he took almost 10 minutes “

EXACTLY!! I’m sorry folks, with all due respect to David Limbaugh, the only thing ‘refreshing’ about Fred Thompson(right now) is the nap I just had listening to his video message in Iowa on youtube!

I understand exactly what David Limbaugh is saying, but ‘fire in the belly’ IS important...so is modulating your voice every now and then to make an important point.

Fred needs to understand that the big bucks are holding back right now because HE IS HOLDING BACK. Folks that are serious about conservatism want to back a winner..and perhaps that is why Limbaugh(David) ends his article with a caveat: “Time to step up Fred”...

and I might add to that:....’time to lose the monotone drawl that puts conservatives(and most everyone else) to sleep’.

I’ve watched his message to Iowa voters. All 17 minutes of it. It took him 8 minutes before he got around to talking about national security, or much of anything.

Hillary Clinton’s message to Iowa voters was 2 minutes. She was focused and direct, compact. She hit all of her points hard. That’s the way it should be done. Fred’s in unfocused, rambling. He really didn’t make any attempt to drive home his experience as chairman on any of these national security committees.

You are right, Zogby is the least reliable and tends
to favor leftwingers more than the others.

Man, c-punch -- if your Fred posting history on Free Republic is your idea of "support," I sure feel sorry for your kids and anyone who works for you or has to live with you!! You are in the top five, or maybe even the top three, of the MOST NEGATIVE posters on this forum! People like you can only ever bring things down, never lift things UP. You rationalize it and comfort yourself by pretending that others are mere "cheerleaders" and you alone are the hard-nosed realist. In reality, you are the mushy pain in the patoot who tries our patience!

The bottom line of your "support" for Thompson is that you have been whining and crying since day one that he isn't doing it the way you think he should, waaah waaah waaaah .... you offer NOTHING constructive to the conversation, only whining. We all know you even though we've never met you, because we all have one of you in the family -- that one sour uncle or drippy second cousin who never has anything good to say about anything, even when that "anything" is something they claim to like.

My dad has a wonderful saying for people like you, and a saying that broke me of the ugly habit of whining when I was a little kid: You'd complain if you were hung with a new rope!

I am in control. Fred said no such thing yet you talk as if he did. Misinformed? Purposefully?

Either way, noted. I hate people that can’t tell the truth and lie intentionally. Character.

Fire in the Belly reminds me of the importance of Gravitas that the media was driving home in 2000. Rush has a very funny montage of that.
