Mow your lawn... or risk jail time in Canton, Ohio
One News Now ^ | June 3, 2008 | Associated Press

Homeowners who don't mow their grass in the northeast Ohio city of Canton now face stiffer penalties-including possible jail time.

The city council unanimously passed a law Monday that makes a second high-grass violation a fourth-degree misdemeanor carrying a fine of up to $250 and as many as 30 days in jail.

The previous law only made the first violation a minor misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $150 but no jail time. The new law is to take effect in 30 days.

"This is the type of action we need to take in order to clean up our neighborhoods and our city," Mayor William J. Healy II said.

The laws are an effort to reduce the roughly $250,000 the city spends to cut about 2,000 private lots each year and to address public complaints, Councilman Greg Hawk has said.

The whole town should stop mowing for a couple months and call their bluff. Big Brother apparently lives in Ohio.

Sounds good to me.

In my town there is an absentee owner who hasn’t mowed his lawn yet this year, and his two-and-a-half foot high weeds sit next to a beautifully maintained house that is up for sale.

If I am not mistaken, there is some law in the Code of Hammurabi to this end.

If you don't keep your property up, you get dinged somehow. Maybe lose some digits.

If not Hammurabi then it was some Sumerian nutcase ruler in the Bronze Age who first thought this up.

I'm sure they could easily find some mexicans willing to do it for less than minimum wage.

I’m glad I live in the country, with a 175 yard driveway. No one can even see my yard.

Taller grass is more “natural” and recycle more carbon. Besides, lawn mowers use that evil gasoline stuff.

I’m amazed they have the nerve to pass such a law with gas prices on the rise.

I moved into my new home in March of 2007 and my neighbor hasn’t mowed her backyard once. I see critters of all types coming into my lawn from hers and my dog even caught a mouse a few weeks ago. She cuts her front - once every 2 weeks - but not the back. I’m debating about reporting her anonymously to the HOA because I’m getting too many little creatures in my yard and some are running under my porch.

I can see the sepia-colored signs popping up all over town:

MOW YOUR LAWN OR GO TO JAIL.

“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers.”

In Corpus Christi, Texas, there are a large number of building and lots owned by absentee land lords and land speculators that are poorly if ever maintained. There is one lot along the bay front owned by foreign investors including Imelda Marcos that was so over grown that it had large huisache and mesquite trees growing on it. The City of Corpus Christi threatened to fine them and charge them for cleaning up the lot unless the owners cleaned it up.

I'm all in favor of requiring property owners to maintain their property. Poorly maintained and boarded up properties decrease the value of neighboring property. Absentee owners who don't maintain their properties are infringing on the rights and property of the people who actually live nearby.
