Egypt bans female circumcision
Radio Netherlands ^ | June 08 2008

Posted on 06/08/2008 7:37:47 AM PDT by knighthawk

Egypt has banned female circumcision. The procedure can only be carried out if there is a medical necessity to do so. The Muslim Brotherhood, the largest opposition party, opposes the ban because it says the honour of women should be protected.

In 2007, the Egyptian government decided that only doctors could carry out the procedure. Last year the rules were tightened even further. In spite of this female circumcision still takes place on a large scale in Egypt. Anyone breaking the new law could face up to two years in prison.

Medically necessary? What sort of medical necessity could there be to carry out female circumcision?

FWIW, this practice is carried out as enthusiastically by Egyptian Christians as Muslims. It probably goes back millenia into Egyptian history.

BTW, “female circumcision” is a PC euphemism. While how drastic the practice is varies greatly, for most types a somewhat closer analogy would be “female castration,” at least if one is discussing sexual response as opposed to fertility.

Medical necessity...........that’ll be the BS way they’ll get it done. This is a ban in name only BS I say. Have you ever heard of being performed in the US because of “medical mecessity”? Total crap.

Now these poor women will have to come to the US, specifically, San Fran, where the city pays for genital mutilation surgery and calls it transgenderism. We progressive folks just put a new name on an old procedure and say we are enlightened and tolerant.

Egypt is moving into the modern world, and rejecting the backward practices that hold back the middle east.
Now if they would just outlaw violence.

“Now if they would just outlaw violence.”

Why should violence be outlawed?

That’s exactly what it is.

That said, “female circumcision” is a lousy description, because while a foreskin may not be essential to a male in many ways, the entire exterior surface of a woman’s sexual organ (not to mention her urinary tract, etc.) is essential to her. Frankly, I can’t even imagine what this must feel like or look like afterwards and I don’t even want to think about it!

But it’s such stunning cruelty, all consistent with the domineering, anti-life cruelty of Islam, committed on a little girl who can’t defend herself, that it takes your breath away.

Female circumcision is a terrible term that completely downplays the severity of this atrocity to a woman.

The term that should be used is female genital mutilation.

Exactly!

Religion of piss is more exact.

Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.

It took them this long? Morons. I thought this only used to happen in deepest Africa, where men kept their women unhappy all the live long day.

Venue butterfly must have made an appearance in Egypt, and when someone suggested circumcision the women said “Now wait a minute, you want to do what?! To what?!”

Cliterectomy is a better term for the procedure.

Somewhere an Imam is drafting the fatwa that it is medically necessary for girls to have this done, so that they do not risk AIDS and HPV by being left intact.

Cancer can occur there and would usually best be treated by cutting it out. Although rare you don't want to outlaw that rare medically necessary treatment and crafting a law to outlaw the religiously motived travesty while allowing medically necessary treatment of tragic circumstances without phrases like "medically necessary" may be difficult. The proof is in how the law is interpreted and enforced. High profile enforcement of the claimed intent of this law will be needed before I, and I suspect many others here, will accept things have changed in Egypt.

Yes it’s a (black) African practice, whether they’re Muslims, Jewish, Christian, or pagan. Egypt has a lot of black African influence. You’ll also find pockets of people who still do this in Arab countries that have had African influence, such as Yemen & Bahrayn.
