I know that for some mysterious reason AP stories cannot be even thought about here...
However, and by now you all should have seen it passing... the AP has suddenly (and probably only temporarily) proclaimed that the US is winning the war in Iraq....
Now, when the AP story IS THE STORY, shouldn't we be able to discuss it?
Does anybody really care?
When they stop charging for quoting more than FOUR words from any article, get back to us.
Well, I suppose a few of us intellectually curious about the duplicity and dishonest of the mainstream media might/
but if we cross off the list of acceptable sources to discuss, at least two thirds of the MSM sources that ARE permissible to refer to here should be scratched off the list.
I for one love discussing the death of the dinossaur media.... Anything more dinosaur than the AP?
Have they actually billed anyone yet?

I guess that the notion of the “fair use” doctrine is of no interest, eh? AP does not dictate fair use, PARTICULARLY when the quotes are in the context of discussing the actions and reportage of the AP, and not simply using the story for the story’s sake.
The AP has suddenly made this declaration BECAUSE OF OBAMA-MESSIAH’s visit.
That’s all it took, one visit from Barry and the war, which had been a lost civil war as of yesterday is not a US victory.
That Obama IS a miracle worker.
Pony up.
I think that you should be aware of the FreeRepublic prohibition against articles discussing the prohibition of AP stories.
Unless, of course, AP IS the story, in which case that too is prohibited.
I thought they went the way of the dinosaur.

You are pushing the limits by mentioning AP in your reply.
Oops.
I don’t care WHAT the ap reports on ANYTHING.
They no longer have relevance........they are essentially dead.
Oh, and I sure don’t need the ap to tell me we’re winning.
>>>This is our Boston tea Party.
>>>The Associated Press wants to levy a $12.50 and up license fee (aka extortion fee) on any blogger who quotes more than 4 words from one of their propaganda pieces. This is an outrageous attempt to control the blogosphere and free speech itself. To hell with their license fee and to hell with the AP. Any AP article that gets posted to FR will be jettisoned into the harbor posthaste.
>>>Please do not post any AP material to FR excerpted or not.
Not wanting to yank anybody’s chain too terribly much, but...
Can someone explain to me WHY such a “request” from the AP is taken seriously, and why no one seems to care about the fair use doctrine.
The AP does not have complete control over their product, simply because they say they do. Their right to control their copyrighted work does NOT include what falls under “fair use” - and thatvaaries with the use.
If the AP publishes a story that is factualy inaccurate, we have the right under “fair use” to quote from the story to the extent reasonably necessary to discuss and demonstrate the erroneous nature of their story.
We are free under “fair use” to discuss the content of their story in the context of criticism of their coverage.
The examples are limitless.
I perfectly understand skepticism about the usefulness and validity of the AP’s reporting- but that’s not at the heart of this.
I am simply really surprised that FR would take the position that its (our) rights under the First Amendment (which is at the heart of the Fair Use doctrine) should be freely abandoned to the idiots at the AP - who hope that their demands will quell legitimate critique.
So far, it seems that it has.
Pity.
Find a blog that talks about the AP article and then post that. Newsbusters.org is talking about the article, you could post theirs.
If we are talking about the AP ban here, I am for that. Anything to help encourage another company to step up and compete with the Associated Press because they have way to much control over what is and isn’t news.
Let Jim know that you’re willing to bankroll the FR legal defense fund all by your lonesome, Einstein.
If you are saying we surrendered unilaterally and unconditionally immediately when this came up, I’m not sure I’d disagree.
>>>I dont care WHAT the ap reports on ANYTHING.
>>>They no longer have relevance........they are essentially dead
Again, I don’t disagree with your assessment of the value of the AP. My only interest is in the critique of their reportage.
Simply pretending that hundreds of millions of people around the world aren’t informed on a daily basis by the AP will not make it so.
But you cannot make the above pronouncement WITHOUT applying it equally to the New York Times, the Washington Post, the LA Times, Reuters, ABCCBSNBC, PMS-NBC, and so on. There is no principled distinction.
So then... When does the ban (at the very least) upon referencing New York Times stories go into effect?
You can post the Newsbusters.com story about the AP’s “Winning the Iraq war”. ...if it’s not already posted.
