Russia invaded the Arctic, claiming it as its’ own, with no repercussions. Why not Georgia? And there Putin was last night at the Olympics chatting with President Bush like he hadn’t a care in the world.

I wonder who the Russian government prefers to be the next U.S. President? The ex-military guy with a temper or the laconic, cigarette-smoking metrosexual?

“Mr President here is your seat in the stands to watch the glorious peoples triumph over the West.”
Umm thank there Mr. Chung”.
“ Laura were my Bino’kulars”
“Laura,Here they are honey”
Putin comes back down the aisle after getting some popcorn and pocketing some folding money given to him by the chinese president.
Putin sees Bush and thinks, “Hmm wonder if Boosh will call me out on this one, he’s got to say SOMETHINGS!”
Putin reaches Bush all the tie thinking of quick comeback.
“Georges Hello”
Bush looks up and half stands.
“Hey there Vladie, howz it goin?”
Putin pauses,....
“Oh very well, beautiful town isn’t it”...
Laura,..”Yes, yes hows the wife”...
Putin,”oh just great”
Bush, fidgeting with his binoculars,...”well see yah at the big cooked dog dinner tonight”
Putin,..”Well maybe George, I have some,.uh conferences calls with the motherland later,”...
Bush,..”Mm okay later then...”
Putin walking away thinking with a little skip.”Wow, Amwerica,..such a paper tiger...Putin, you rock!”

Thanks. I hope I’m not being too optimistic that this will wake up the neutrals out there. But as others have said, this has a different feeling from other crises.....even 9/11 didn’t seem to possess the strategic threat that this one appears to have. Only time will tell if the GOP can turn this into a election plus. One thing is certain, harsh reality has a way of focusing people’s minds. And given the frivolous nature of our culture, this is a good thing.

They are not screaming about Russia because this argument is clearly (to them) at least partly caused by Georgia.

This is the real danger of moral relativism. Even when one side has obviously conducted physical aggression first the other must bear some blame because (obviously) party one must have had some reason to invade. Ergo, party two, in saner times known as “the victim”, must bear some responsibility.

Now, I don’t know too much about the local politics there. I do know there are genuine grievances between the two countrys based on sovereignty and race and economics. But those differences do not justify an invasion. Therefore that physical aggression has to be condemned.

And to further complicate this matter, the Georgians are pulling 1000 troops out of Iraq and have asked the US Air Force to fly them home so they can help fight off the Russians.

I think the soccer moms and metrosexuals are going to peek out from their self centered world of life coaches and diets and notice that the world is still a very dangerous place.

Only once the lines at the gas pumps start.

What the diplomatic side of the WH says and the private side says are not necessarily the same.

Quite true ... and a fact very often overlooked.

Weeellllllll, I don't know. I think you've nailed the relevant parties, but I wouldn't be so sure that they'd side with McCain on this one. Their recognition of the danger may actually be real -- but their response to it might just as easily fall behind Obama's more comforting rhetoric.

Georgia is clearly within any reasonably defined Russian sphere of interest.

Georgia is very small, and Russia is very big. Georgia needs to concentrate on getting along with Russia.

Our interests there are zero, or nearly so.

Good point. Sure hope we don't have to endure drinking the bitter cup internationally over a four year boyBO administration. But at the end of the day I think enough stones still exists in the men of this country that we will rise to the challenge.I still believe it is not a question of "IF" but a question of "WHEN". Which, as we all know, has unfortunetly been true throughout our history.
