Great guy from the Greatest Generation, a consummate professional, gentleman and American patriot. George Putnam will be sadly missed!

God bless you George. You were the lone-eagle conservative in an ocean of liberals.

That's a shame. I never got to listen to his radio show but I was actually a guest on it back in the 1990s. Those were my Prodigy days (before Free Republic) and I got an email to go on his show and talk about the Whitewater scandal.

I had no idea he was that old when I talked to him. Take a look at the picture of him on his Wikipedia article. This was taken in 1965 when he was already 51 years old but he looks young in that picture.

At least it appears that he was blessed with a long and rewarding life.

DougfromUpland, you undoubtedly already heard about this. But here are some other factoids, which I believe are correct, about Putnam.

Descended from Israel Putnam, General in the Revolutionary War (though not a good one).

Was a Democrat, an FDR man (interviewed Eleanor Roosevelt), though I don’t see these claims verified anywhere other my memory.

Was the template for Ted Baxter on Mary Tyler Moore’s show. This was a dig at him by the lefties, even back then.

I suspect he wanted to be around at least to see this November’s outcome.

Guess he is on a new and better assignment somewhere . . .

I too listened to George in LA in recent years. I loved hearing his stories of the Hollywood of the '30s and '40s especially about his good friend Ronald Reagan. His take on the current news was always fresh and upbeat.

If anyone, anywhere deserved to be described as a "gentleman journalist" he was the one.

RIP

RIP, Mr. Putnam. Used to listen to him on my car radio at lunch time. Was quick to see the evil of the Clintons.

Being born in SoCal I have followed George’s career all along. In recent years on the radio. Yes he had a lot of stories to tell from the 30’s right on up to today. He had “One Reporters Opinion”. Hope I got that right. RIP George you will be missed.

He was a great one. A conservative newsman and supporter of Governor Reagan during the dreadful late sixties.

“That’s one reporter’s opinion. I welcome yours.”

God rest him.

George was the John Wayne of the broadcasting world.
He was a voice for freedom and reason.
God speed, George.
