A Porn Star and Christian Values

John Gechter's story has been troubling me ever since I read it in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09128/968674-298.stm)on Friday, May 8th. Gechter was set to graduate from Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania which is about 65 miles north of Pittsburgh.

The college is situated in a rural area, and was founded in 1879 as a strict Christian institution, which it remains today. It prides itself as an authentic Christian institution. The college is also listed as one of the top ten conservative schools in the nation with very rigorous academics. Sex outside of marriage, heterosexual or gay is forbidden, according to the student handbook, and will result in disciplinary action.

Gechter found out first hand this week that the rule book was serious. The discipline was harsh after it was discovered he was working in the adult film industry as a 22 year old porn star. While there was no on campus porn film activity, the student, working towards a degree in molecular biology, was suspended indefinitely and can not re-apply until late 2010.

Gechter, who worked under the name Vincent DeSalvo, has received over 200 threatening emails, according to the Gazette newspaper, and he has also had food thrown at him in the dining room at the Christian College.

According to the account, the student who flew to various cities on the weekends for film shoots, used the money he earned for college tuition and expenses. Tuition alone at the college is listed at over $12,000 per year.

The student, who claims he is bisexual, says he remains a believer and a Christian, although the incident has forced him to re-evaluate his beliefs. He, according to published reports, says it was wrong to participate in the industry. He admits he was wrong and at the same time says the Christian college is not demonstrating Christian values.

I tend to support the porn star and think the Christian Grove City College has mishandled the situation. Forgiveness is a key tenant of Christianity; as I recall there was a good thief and a bad thief crucified along with Jesus, and there are other teachings about sexual misconduct and who should cast the first stone. And we only need to recall the words "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us."

I do understand this is a very difficult situation and the only information is gleaned from a public newspaper. And I would be sure there were some officials who agonized over the issues. However, the actions by some students and administrators at this college does not seem to be in keeping with Gospel. What are your thoughts?

(Note: I did check out some Web pages for Vincent DeSalvo and yes it is pornographic by almost every definition. Now the photo of the snake I have included is not to demean snakes which I think are pretty cool creatures. But I did not want to submit porn and besides it was the mythological serpent snake in Genesis that brought about a lot of trouble.)

Love the Sinner, hate the sin. Saying you are sorry is not enough, you must stop doing it as well.

Well... makes one wonder about those who call this university home, sounds no different to me than a leftist liberal university threatening and throwing food at a returning veteran/student.

This is hardly a “difficult sitution.” The college is a private institution ( I assume) and has articulated standards regarding its purposes and community standards. Words fail when equivocation becomes the standard by which we judge things.

Is it hard to believe that a gay might believe in God as well?

I know of a woman who had a roaring career as a belly dancer/stripper while working on a pre-med degree (she earned enough money not to worry about tuition or bills during med school later).

This young fellow has the right concept but the wrong industry. He could have worked as a model or Chippendale rather than performed sex acts. For someone who is probably intelligent this was a really dumb thing to do.

The student, who claims he is bisexual,

"You either .... ...., or you do not .... ...., there is no in-between."

“Forgiveness is a key tenant of Christianity”

For those who forsake their sin.

Forgiveness is a "tenet" of Christianity, but forgiveness does not mean that consequences for bad behavior choices are ignored because the person has received forgiveness.

This individual knew the standards and rules of the college before he went to the college. He made the choice to engage in behavior he knew would get him suspended. He owns what he did and now he will suffer the results.

And as far as "re-examining his beliefs", he should re-examine his salvation. If he was able to engage in homosexual behavior with apparently no problems with his conscience, then he needs to question whether or not he really knows Jesus Christ.

"Believing" is not what is at issue.

He chose to break school rules.

ie. . Sex outside of marriage, heterosexual or gay is forbidden, according to the student handbook, and will result in disciplinary action.

While John did break the colleges rules and should have some discipline the other people at the university are really no better. The ones sending him threatening emails and throwing food at him in the college's cafeteria are no better then him. They are not showing any Christian values themselves.

“Is it hard to believe that a gay might believe in God as well?”

The Bible says even the demons believe in God.

A murderer might believe in God, but it’s not going to do him a lot of good if he continues in this sin.

Believing in God and Obeying His Commandments are two different things.

Although I believe what John Gechter did was wrong, what really bothers me is the hatred exhibited towards him by other Christian students on campus. Threats and hostile acts against him ( if what he said was true ) does nothing for the cause of Christianity.

Yes, he could have worked in the porn industry and put himself through college. But he is at the wrong college for that. Which he CHOSE to attend. Which he CHOSE to follow THEIR rules.

Porn star and Christianity do not mix well. The college is well within its bounds to boot him. He is just playing the victim in this, which is also not very Christian. He could just accept responsibility for his own choices, stop whining, get a real job and stay at Grove College OR go to Harvard or somewhere where he’d be welcomed with open arms.

If you get an F in class, just go to the teacher and tell them you are sorry and it gets turned in to an A...because it’s a Christian school.right...isn’t forgiveness a Christian value?/sarc

Actually, you reap what you sow. You can be forgiven, but you still have to face the consequences of your actions. The thief on the cross was forgiven, but he was still put to death.

why not forgive basically anything then?

why have rules or criteria or standards period?

many folks...kumbaya Christians and non Christians in particular harp on all this forgiveness and don’t cast the first stone stuff as a way to discredit any moral responsibility

in fact that notion is arguably the biggest weapon the left has and they use it deftly over race, gender and homosexuiality issues.

i say RUBBISH.

plenty of schools expell over dope or boorish behavior or failure , cheating etc.

folks have to stand for something....this nation sure once did...but now all we stand for is warm fuzzy shite
