Superior Swedish Sub Sinks American Nuclear Subs & Aircraft Carrier, USS Reagan (Video)
YouTube ^ | 12/12/10 | Chuck Henry

Posted on 02/12/2010 10:48:29 PM PST by OneVike

Ever since WWII, America has been a dominant force upon the high seas. We have become so advanced in our military technology that the Soviet Union eventually collapsed, in large part because Ronald Reagan would not back down against them. In honor of his accomplishments and great leadership, congress named the worlds largest aircraft carrier after him, the USS Ronald Reagan. Well it has been 22 years since Reagan left office, and while we have been able to hold our status as the worlds most powerful military the world has ever seen, those days could be coming to an end.

Thanks in large part to the anti military sentiment that prevails in Washington, from both sides of the isle, America is losing the war of technical advancement. What you will see in this video is a submarine from Sweden the, NemoSaltadSobrius, that cannot be detected, and even worse it has repeatedly sunk our best and most powerful naval ships in mock war games. Check out this report out of San Diego by Chuck Henry, who reports that America is attempting to figure out how to catch in before our enemies discover the secret of its elusiveness.

Follow this link to see the video about the Swedish sub that could be the end America's domination of the
high seas. The Swedish sub "NemoSaltadSobrius" beats us in ever war game we played against it.

Glad to see some people accept reality.

Folks, we train like this for a reason. And there has been distinct interest in modern diesels and the threat of modern diesels has been openly discussed. If this war game opens some eyes in leadership that's a good thing. Hopefully, brass doesn't share the prevailing attitude on this thread of "can't happen."

“But active sonar gives away more information than it collects.”

That’s why we put it on helicopters.

The PANTHER Tank was a superior tank. Panzer was a generic name for tank. Panzer 1, 2 and 3.

We had to rely on 76mm guns to hurt most Panther/Tigers.

Get real. It is a totally insignificant war game. This sub will be long gone if it goes in a real fight with the US Navy.

The thing about wargames is that they're usually structured to look at very specific scenarios.

CSGs have a multi-layered defense system. Think of multiple rings surrounding the CVN and extending out hundreds of miles. The space between the rings requires its own tactics and capabilities (from F/A-18s striking the SS's ports, to P-3s nailing them when they are snorkling a hundred or two miles out, to SSNs hunting them within the middle/outer defense rings to the SH-60s using MAD and dipping sonar within the inner defense rings) for addressing the threat.

The chances of an SS making it safely out of harbor and then into position to take a torpedo shot at a CVN are exceedingly small. But the USN still has to practice for a scenario where an SS DOES make it inside the outer defense rings. Which means setting up attack scenarios where the SS is inside the inner ring as an input into the wargame.

For all the "Foreign SS kills US CVN" articles, I've never read a single one where the scenario is an SS breaching the entire layered defense rings. It's always a situation where the wargame starts with the SS within 10-20 miles of a carrier, placing the carrier at an immediate disadvantage.

Point 2: Even the most smug nuke will admit that diesel-electrics are quieter than a nuke, simply because you don't have to run reactor cooling pumps. Last I heard, convection cooled reactors are still unsafe.

I'm a smug nuke. Err, I was in the 90s. The last you heard was wrong. Put "S8G" in Google. 726 class subs use natural circ reactors. (They have coolant pumps for balls to the wall operation too.) Like these AIP subs, the 726 class is described as noise holes in the ocean.

I don't know much about the S6W or S9G plants in the Seawolf and Virginia class subs, other than there is/was a S6W core in a S8G plant at the prototype facility in West Milton, NY. The things I heard about the S6W plant configuration while in the navy, I can't find on the web, so instincts tell me not to divulge the info. Suffice to say that it should be at least as quiet as the S8G plant...

Regardless of all of this who's quieter than whom talk, that's only half the picture. Sonar systems are the other half. Submarines are still the best ASW platform, and no navy in the world has as advanced passive sonar suites as ours.

Exactly correct, this sub has to position it’s self perfectly to get in a hot. Never gonna happen in the open ocean. And during times of war that is where carriers operate in the open ocean. Now in confinded waters a slow speeds this sub (any sub) is a killer.

Great point but the issue is the sites of potential conflicts; Persian Gulf, Straits of Taiwan, etc partially negate the depth of the ASW defense.

You think that it’s all Psy-Ops? Fine. I don’t. I think it is very realistic training and it’s a damn good thing we are doing it.

Never having been in the Navy, mine is the layman's perspective, but it would seem to me that these exercises with the Swedes ought to serve to help us to develop some tactics against this sort of D/E sub, as well as get a better grasp of "knowing what to look for" when dealing with type of weapon system.

Only, it is turning out to be a bit of an embarrassment for the USN because the Swedes keep winning.

It speaks well of the USN to let themselves be embarrassed to solve a serious problem.

Sometimes you learn more from losing in maneuvers like this than you do from winning.

But, but I thought the 688-I, Seawolf and Virginia class nuke boats were superior to short-ranged and slower D-E boats?

In the first place these are not diesel-electric boats. They use a propulsion system called air-independent propulsion that allows them to use their main propulsion systems without the need for an air supply. They are incredibly quiet.

And let's not forget that this submarine is the product of a high tech society, crewed by highly trained and experienced officers and men, from a navy that has operated submarines for decades. They are every bit as good as a U.S. crew on a U.S. submarine. This is not the same as a North Korean crew or a Iranian crew or a Venezuelan crew.

*** Yeah, because the egomaniac carrier admirals in the USN preferred to build them big instead of smaller, escort-type carriers in larger numbers. ***

'Technically' we do have some 'escort-type carriers' today, they're used by the US Marines. They're not called 'escort carrier' today, but for all intents and purposes that's what they are.
