Dr. Marci Bowers slipped into a chair in Exam Room 3, folded one long leg over another, looked at her patient a young woman with wide eyes and a nervous smile and got to the point.
"We want to help make your life better," Bowers said.
Mariama is as tiny as the 5-foot-10-inch Bowers is formidable, as soft-spoken as Bowers is confident. Mariama speaks softly and smiles easily, but a few hours with her make clear that her determination is as strong as it is quiet.
She is 26 and lives with her husband and daughter in Virginia, and didn't want her last name used. Originally, she is from Guinea, a country about the size of Oregon on Africa's western coast. Guinea has about 10 million residents, and about 96 percent of the women there have, like Mariama, been genitally mutilated.
Mariama and the six other women, all originally from Africa, crowding Dr. Bowers' tiny Trinidad clinic have traveled a long way to get that fixed. The women have come to this former coal-mining town in southern Colorado looking for more than just reconstructive surgery. They want relief from pain. They are looking for a chance, as one put it, to be normal.
"I want to be like everyone else," said Kady Meite, the only one of the women who agreed to have her full name used. "Now, I feel nothing. I feel pain" during sex, she said.
The World Health Organization estimates that 100 million to 140 million women worldwide, but especially in northern and central Africa, have endured female genital mutilation, or FGM.
Usually done to girls before age 15, the practice involves at least slicing off part or all of the exposed clitoris. In some cultures, the cutting is more extensive, and disfiguring.

Where is NOW? WaPo? The religion of peace at it again and they are still mad about Sarah Palin...
Why is female circumcision considered mutilation, and male circumcision thought perfectly fine?
The custom is most closely associated with Islam. Newsweek has reported that Dr. Foldes has received death threats as a result of his surgeries.
I am speechless.
Trinidad CO is the sex change capital of the world.
TROP-apologists usually admit this, affecting a suitably long face, as a necessary evil. They can’t stand to see the Islam replaced with “decadent” Western values.
Well the foreskin is for the most part justs that,, skin.
Obviously, I believe the males um sexual sensitive area is still intact and not harmed. If you cut off the clitoris.. well i guess thats kinda obvious what that does...*coughs*
Because in male circumcision except in unusual cases, only skin is being removed and does not interfere with the function of the penis.
With female circumcision, a sexual organ is being detroyed and not only removes any ability to reach an orgasm, can cause severe lifelong pain in urination as well as just having sex.
If you study the details of each procedure, you will understand that "circumcision" is actually an inaccurate euphemism for the female procedure. "Mutilation" is much more accurate.
Ergo, mutilation (female) is mutilation and circumcision (male) is fine.
A reasonable question.
First, though, understand that male circumcision is not thought 'perfectly fine' by everyone. Indeed there is a small, but growing, worlwide movement to ban the practice (or at least ban doing it to kids before their age of majority.)
Still, today, it is not viewed in a harsh negative way. Look at the differences between the two customs:
1. Male circumcision (MC) does not result in a lifetime of pain during sex, as FGM does, in many cases.
2. MC does not prevent men from experiencing orgasm, as FGM typicall does, and is designed to do. The goal of MC is not the fundamental alteration of a basic function of the human body.
3. MC is typcially done to infants, who are not angry and traumitized by the experience (or at least not able to remember being angry and traumitized as adults). In contrast FGM is done at age 12, against the consent of girls who well remember the force and coercion used on them.
4. MC rarely results in death or serious complications. FGM has much more frequent complications.
5. MC may have some health benefits, particularly in cultures where frequent bathing is either not possible or not practiced.
6. MC is a Western tradtion, thus people in the West consider it normal Few people in the Magrib consider FGM a terrible practice, it is normal there.
I think because FGM is deliberately done to destroy the sex drive and is sometimes so extensive that they can’t even urinate normally. Circumsizing males is believed to help lower the risk of infections. That’s what I was told, anyway.
I was just getting ready to make that same observation.
How long until Squantos wanders by to ask us how we knew that?
LOL!
Never answer a personals ad in the Trinidad Times Independant!
” Meite, who said she has converted to Christianity, believes “God has a purpose for everything.” Now, she said, she has found the answer to why this happened to her.
“Now, I have found someone who can help me, and so I can help a lot of other women.” “
The equivalent to female circumcision for a man would involve lopping off the head of the penis with unsanitary cutting tools.
Female circumcision is solely designed to prevent a woman from experiencing sexual pleasure. It is a means of control, since a woman would not have a reason to commit adultery since sex is at best a bothersome experience, often painful and never really pleasurable.
good grief....
male circumcision is more for hygiene and does not interfere with male 'enjoyment' nor give life long pain.
Female circumcised is to prevent women from having any pleasure during sex (the better to keep them from roaming) - and gives pain, often for the rest of their lives.
the above facts easily accessible on the net - but so many posters seem to want spoon feeding
Do they go inside and cut out the girls G-Spot too? because the clit is not the only way a girl can reach orgasim.
“Do they go inside and cut out the girls G-Spot too? because the clit is not the only way a girl can reach orgasim.”
Heeeeee, you must be male. The clitoris is most certainly the only way a girl can reach orgasm. The “g-spot” is a sensitive area that increases arousal (it’s actually the thin membrane between the vagina and sensitive rectal cavity) but the clitoris is the start and end of the orgasm.
Cleaning up another mess created by Islam.
