Mitt Romney Interviewed by Chris Wallace (A disaster?)

I watched the Mitt Romney interview on Fox News Watch with Chris Wallace this morning. I actually watched twice, I was stunned. What a debacle! Apparently, this was his opening gambit in his 2012 Presidential campaign, since he has written a book. Wallace, by far the most skilled of the talking head interviewers, pressed Romney on his two primary claims: that Obama has spent his first year apologizing for being an American, and that his health care plan is awful.

Romney was unable to delineate any major differences between the plan he developed in Massachusetts and Obama’s, except that the latter is a national policy, whereas Romney’s just applied to one state. He claimed that insurance companies bear no responsibility for rising health care costs, and then said that when insurance companies act ‘badly’, actions should be taken against them, but couldn’t clarify what he meant. When he tried to say a difference was that the Massachusetts plan didn’t have a public option, Wallace nearly laughed out loud. I don’t know if Romney thought that Wallace would give him a free ride, since it was on Fox. If he did think that, he might have wanted to watch the show once in awhile or at least prepare.

I readily admit that he is the presumptive nominee. Wall Street adores him. My guess is that if he gets the nomination, it would be a debacle. Name one Bible Belt state that would support him – perhaps Mississippi. He will bring down a number of Republican House seats in this region. He didn’t say anything that I thought was believable in the last campaign. I had made a bet with a friend that if he and HRC won their respective nominations, we could set up lie detectors on both of them, and make a drinking game out of it. But that’s beside the point. Instead of just foisting another nominee upon the American public, it might be worth the party’s time to actually try to figure out who the voters would support. For his part Romney might try being honest, and see how Americans like actually knowing what he would do. But I sort of think he doesn’t even know what he believes any more.

Chris Wallace asked him 4 times about Romneycare being very similar to Obamacare. Romeny tried to defend Romneycare while distinguishing it from Obamacare. It didn't go well. He ended up saying it was a state plan but he would oppose it at the federal level. He said it got almost everyone in Massachusetts covered by insurance so it saved lives. Wallace pointed out MA has the most expensive insurance rates in the nation and Romney said Massachusetts would be even more expensive if they had not roped the young healthy people into the system with the individual mandate.

FWIW......on Intrade, Palin has overtaken Romney, so some people is putting money on Palin throughout the day, this may have to do with the interview.

Romney needs to understand that the support he got in the end was because he was the only thing standing in the way of McCain.

“I readily admit that he is the presumptive nominee. “

Far from it. It’s wide open, as far as I can tell. Sarah can have the nomination, IF she comes out as a conservative. But right now, her libertarian streak is showing a bit loud. If a well-respected Republican (like Demint) shows up, then anything can happen, again.

Unless you’re looking for someone who specializes in BS artistry, yes.

People making bets on who the 2012 Republican nominee is going to be this far out have rocks in their head.

Romney has so many flip-flops on record that he would go down the same way John Kerry did, without the adoring media.

It would be a disaster and I think the GOP has this as there clever plan on how to lose the 2012 election.

Some might think it impossible, but I think they can pull off an election day debacle!

Romney is a loser. Romneycare doomed him last time around to a substantial degree, and he came across in this interview as exactly what he is: a political opportunist. He passed a Socialized Medicine Program in a supposedly liberal state, and the Massachusetts residents now discover they hate it. It’s indefensible, and he’s stupid to try to go out and defend it. He needs to be taken off the Republican Stage ASAP and given some kind of background, low key position. Romney’s nothing more than a Bush-Style political hack with much more baggage to have to explain.

Like I said inTrade is for what it’s worth if any... but the larger question is and has been can meet be convincing enough Obama may be wiping Mitt the floor with all of these issues in 2012 claiming he is a hypocrite.

Rominey & Huckabee = RINO’s we don’t need. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the RNC get behind either of them.

Romney touts not raising taxes to create/pay for his MA Health Care.

Wallace points out that he got FED money to create it.

Romney admits that FED money pays for half of the MA Health Care. That is the reason they didn’t have to raise taxes.

Oops.

Tell that to the Republican Establishment in D.C......Mitts their man!!!.....Mitt would be fine in a Republican cabinet but these times are not asking for Romney-type politics....the times are asking for someone with conviction that will absolutely do the things necessary to actually cut government than just the growth of it.

I think you are right. I would have preferred Romney over McCain, but that isn't saying anything to Romney's credit.

It was a very weak field... I think Thompson probably was the most Conservative, but he did not seem to have his heart in it.

Of the RINO’s I think Giuliani had the best leadership and executive abilities. He did wonders in NYC when you think about the hell-hole he inherited.

Let's hope we have a better field in 2012...

Mitts their man!!!

Thats for certain and I think they will try to sandbag anyone who threatens ‘their guy’.

Sarah Palin seems to be the only who could possibley upset that as the others will probably just run to set themselves up in the lineup for 2016.

I got a bad feeling about 2012.

My guess is that if he gets the nomination, it would be a debacle.

If the economy improves even modestly, Obama will be harder and harder to beat, especially if the GOP stick with the recycled bunch of wannabes who've been trying to get the nomination for years.

Out of desperation, the GOP could go with that other Bush, Jeb, and learn that voters are still suffering from Bush fatigue.

Listening to the interview now. Romney uses the dreaded progressive phrase regarding the “Romney care” plan....”we moved forward”.

Then he admits there is a mandate in “Romney care” for people to buy insurance or their taxes go up. What a TOOL!!!
