Jail locks out health workers who held one-day strike

OAKLAND — Health care workers at both jails in Alameda County were not allowed to return to work today after they took to the picket lines Tuesday to protest six months of stalled contract negotiations and what they call unfair labor practices.

Workers at the Dublin jail this morning told news outlets they were turned away by their supervisors.

The workers, members of the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, approved the one-day strike last month after working more than two months without a contract and making minimal headway on a new one with Tennessee-based Prison Health Services. That company has a contract with Alameda County to provide health care staff, such as nurses and medical record technicians, to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and the North County Jail in Oakland.

Prison Health Services officials would not comment Tuesday but did issue a statement Friday that said, "PHS regrets SEIU's decision to walk out and remains committed to negotiate a fair, reasonable and competitive contract" and said it would "ensure patient care is uninterrupted."

Temporary workers did replace union workers at 6 a.m. Tuesday. Sgt. J.D. Nelson, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, said no problems at either facility had been reported, although workers Wednesday claimed that inmates were not receiving their medication.

A memo from the company to staff was circulated last week saying the union workers would not be allowed back to work until March 16 or until a new contract was signed — whichever happened first.

Only a week off? Should give them a year or so to think about how good the union is.

I think the economic future of this country depends in large part on absolutely destroying unions.

They should be busted, locked out, banned, shunned and quarantined as the outdated, crushing, destructive, uncompetitive labor monopolies they are.

Hand the union a new contract with a 20% DECREASE in pay.

Hang a big banner on the side of the jails

.....NOW HIRING.....

Start taking apps, with interviews to start next Monday.

Workers will cave before the week-end.

This is exactly what SHOULD happen. Unfortunately, the state’s government workers union would never allow it. I say fire them too though. Too many people out of work for a union to push it’s crap.

These SEIU thugettes were not getting pay cuts or increases in the cost of health care.

They were asked to pay some of their share of their Dental Plans.

Everyone is terrified that they may lose their jobs. Yet the Union thugs seem to think they are immune. Take a day off to party (picket) and expect to be welcomed back. Maybe the Jail is interviewing people that would actually appreciate a job.

Does our future also depend on destroying the public stock company?

Perhaps I’m overly fond of symmetry, but I can’t think of any justifications, ethically or economically, to advocate collective capital while despising collective labor.

If unions were only allowed to operate in publicly-held corporations, you might have a point.

Even then, the balance of power would still be with the union. Union employees are still free to come and go as they please, but corporations have a much more difficult time of terminating/downsizing them, to name but one issue.

The starting salary for these SEIU thuggette RNs is $40/hour and at this time zero cost/co pay for health insurance.

That is a starting salary of $83200 plus incredible benefits for today and probably one of the best retirement plans in the world after 25 to 30 years.

One is totally voluntary and free, while the other is coercive and enslaving to the politics of envy!!!

One is a productive host, while the other is parasitic!!!

Are you also fond of the symetry between good and evil???

I'm not!!!

Amazing. Yet SEIU bitches and moans as if they are destitute.

Unions are out of control.
There is a limit to what they can get. If it’s not acceptable leave. I’m sure there are plenty of people that would gladly take these jobs.

Behrens said the main sticking point is what the union sees as a huge increase in health care costs employees must pick up. She said even though Prison Health Services is offering 3 percent wage increases, those are more than offset by the 30 percent health care cost increase.

The union says the company agreed to a 10 percent increase in wage and health care benefits, but is now backtracking and instead proposing cuts.

Starting nurses at the facilities make approximately $40.50 an hour.

Hopefully, the reality of what they make and why they struck gets out into the local news, regional news and conservative radio talks shows.

This example shows the greed and evil of the SEIU thugs across the board.

“Are you also fond of the symetry between good and evil???”

Fond is NOT the word I would choose. But I am accustomed to thinking in those terms. The existence of evil, as well as good, and the existence of the devil and the struggle between good and evil are foundational to the cultural traditions which shape my thinking. Maybe that’s why I’m so fond of symmetry.
