Gay rights activists say they have failed to qualify a measure that would repeal California's same-sex marriage ban for the November ballot.
Restore Equality 2010 chairman Sean Bohac says the volunteer-run group fell short of gathering the nearly 695,000 signatures needed to put the initiative before voters. Monday was the deadline for submitting the signatures to the Secretary of State's Office.
Bohac says Restore Equality's failed effort was undermined by the decision of more established gay rights groups not to participate in the campaign.
He says same-sex marriage supporters now are turning their attention to trying to repeal Proposition 8 in 2012.
A lawsuit to overturn Prop. 8 also is pending before a federal trial judge.
Ordinarily this would put an issue to rest for many years.
But I’m sure that these whack-jobs are already working on another plan to try and foist this on the voters again real soon.
I don't expect them to stop, but slowing them down is always a good thing.
ping and yeah!
I just don’t get it. I thought prop 8 was a constitutional amendment. How can an amendment be “unconstitutional”?
It can only happen when the proponents of that position are filled with a white hot demonic zeal to seal their deal with the DEVIL!!!
A homosexual federal judge who has all but declared that he will do via fiat what cannot be done at the polls.
Do California voters have “repeat initiative fatigue”?
When did rules ever mean anything to Democrats? Just “deem” the law overturned...
I bet that certain Democrat candidates running this year begged and bribed the homosexual advocates to lay low this year.
The Demodogs already are going to have enough trouble getting elected without drawing even more energy into the race from the moderate and right voters.
Oh, darn. I never saw anyone collecting signatures to place this on the ballot. I would have loved to have told them my opinion to their face.
Yes, we do. Not only that, but we have initiative fatigue in general. The initiatives form of governing is a very poor way to run a state.
Another problem is that the process assumes that initiatives are approved by an educated and informed voter.
And, the other problem with the CA initiative system is that our state legislature doesn’t do it’s job properly, which lends itself to people putting bad initiatives on the ballot in an attempt to fix problems created by them.
