Why Congress should use web conferencing

Posted on 04/13/2010 4:34:42 AM PDT by Halfmanhalfamazing

Consider the benefits:

1) Congress does not listen to us, and I suspect at least part of that is due to being up in DC up in their ivory towers looking down their noses at us. So if members of congress were at home in their districts and US senators at 'home' in their state capitals, they would be a lot closer to their constituents and it should give we the people much greater power. It also removes all of them from the daily cesspool that is the DC culture.

2) It's a security issue. We all remember 9/11. What if that fourth plane would've taken out the entirety of congress? I know many of you would like that idea but let's face it that would create a series of huge problems. It splits up government and makes them harder to target as one group.

3) It would save tax payers a huge amount of money for several reasons. How much money do reps/senators waste with their flights back and forth? And there isn't a need to pay them so much to maintain two homes either. Cast your votes from home district.

4) Having congress/senate split up in this manner would seriously reduce the left wing media's power too, they might even run into a conservative every now and then.

With the advent of CSPAN many, many things are broadcast on national television, so it isn't like there's some big secrecy issue that is being violated here.

Lots of upsides, not many down sides. What do you think?

There are a lot of software packages out there which will facilitate this - Webex........ go to meeting.....

I think it's time they were used to enhance governmental representation.

Save more money, limit them to meeting 1 week a year.

I’m sure that an NSA-created “secure” network could prevent that problem.

Hahah! Are you serious? Well, you have to be, there’s the link.

That’s hilarious. I’ve had this idea for months now after I heard someone on the radio throw the idea around but I didn’t post it as I wanted to think about it.

So the same day I finally post spectator also posts about it.

That’s funny.

Great minds :-)

“Subject to hacking during crucial ‘floor’ votes.”

The US Government has plenty of expertise in securing communications links. Besides, the parasite lobbyists and special interest groups constantly hack votes as it is—just not electronically.

Exactly, I envision the day when Congressmen will work from their local offices and will only have to travel occasionally to DC. That would be a good thing.
