Attorney General Eric Holder says the federal government will enforce its marijuana laws in California even if voters next month make the state the first in the nation to legalize the drug.
The Justice Department strongly opposes California's Proposition 19 and remains firmly committed to enforcing the federal Controlled Substances Act in all states, Holder wrote in a letter to former chiefs of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter, dated Wednesday.
"We will vigorously enforce the CSA against those individuals and organizations that possess, manufacture or distribute marijuana for recreational use, even if such activities are permitted under state law," Holder wrote.
Under federal law, marijuana is still strictly illegal. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the federal government has the right to enforce its ban regardless of state law.

...unless the offender belongs to the New Black Panthers.
That’s what he says.
REALLY????
Awwwww, DUUUUUUUUUUDE!
Since when does the Constitution give the Feds the right to tell a state that it can’t legalize anything, if it decides to. We can’t argue against health care reform on a states rights platform, and say that the feds can make something illegal when a state legalizes it.
Given what’s in store for CA, we need to legalize marijuana just so we can get stoned enough to cope with what our pols intend to do to us.
But AZ can't enforce illegal immigrant issues?
BANKRUPT CRIMINALS, TALIBAN, CONGRESSCRITTERS, your local DODGECOP wannabees - LEGALIZE ALL DRUGS ! ! ! ! !
It has to do with strict drug enforcement guidelines in Federal contracts within the state of California. Basically...the feds may cancel or limit contracts if the state passes a pot law.
“...the feds may cancel or limit contracts if the state passes a pot law.”
That would be awesome.
I do see the consistency on the part of the Feds. The States be damned no matter what legislation is enacted.
There is no stopping Big Brother.
I agree! LOL
Too bad the feds aren’t as committed to enforcing immigration laws.
A blatant violation of State’s Rights.
However, the Nanny State Sycophants will be happy.
The federal government has no authority whatsoever to ban or otherwise regulate sales of marijuana within any state. None. If California or any other state wants to legalize or otherwise decriminalize drugs, then the federal government has no authority to intervene if the drugs are produced and consumed within the same state.
Since the Feds fail at everything they do except the military, I would not be too worried about it if I lived in California. Since Dept of Justice attorneys are media whores, they will only go for the high profile cases that give them face time with the press.
Recreational drugs were criminalized ONLY as a means of grabbing power. Look at the HUNDREDS of laws that allow the federal and state governments to snoop into and control your private affairs all to prevent some loser from smoking a doobie, eating Cheetos, and watching cartoons.
it will bring about another state's rights problem for Obama which will help other states for things like immigration, health care, etc?
