A Texas state lawmaker has filed a bill that would require candidates for president or vice president to show their birth certificates to the secretary of state before being allowed on the ballot, and the measure could become effective as early as next year if adopted and signed into law.
The move by Rep. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, renews the threat to a second Oval Office term for Barack Obama that was posed last year when the state House in Arizona actually adopted the requirement, but the session ended before the Senate acted.
Berman's legislation, House Bill 295, is brief and simple:
It would add to the state election code the provision: "The secretary of state may not certify the name of a candidate for president or vice-president unless the candidate has presented the candidate's original birth certificate indicating that the person is a natural-born United States citizen."
It includes an effective date of Sept. 1, 2011, in time for the expected presidential campaigning for 2012.

Hehehehe. I love it.

Good news! Way to go Texas!
Before 2008 I would have thought this to be a no brainer.
Arizona and every state should require this.
We have already seen what can happen without it.
Good for Texas.
This needs to be done long before the primaries even start.
I guess everyone realizes this could prevent a second run, if the guy could’t provide his full version birth certificate.
Oh the huge manatees.
Some judge will overturn.
Don’t you know it is an undue burden to make candidates prove they are citizens before running for office.
Another FReeper (sorry, I can’t remember who) stated, at least a month ago, that Obama wouldn’t run in 2012 because an individual state would pass a law requiring that each candidate must submit his or her long-form birth certificate in order to get on the ballot.
My recollection is that this person predicted that Arizona would be the state to do it, but I could be wrong.
Rush talked about this today.
Do you have another source besides World Nut Daily? I’d like to forward...but not with that source.
I hope many states will do this as well, Florida, Virginia would be great candidates...
Nice...now that we Republicans have a majority in the house...
I would have modified the language as indicated by bold characters above. This would require the BC to be submitted for the primary ballot as well.
Florida has a GOP majority in both houses. They should pass this laww as well and make it incredibly detailed to cover any loophool or trick the islamic may and will try.
The problem is FL’s GOP like TX are RINOs. More states need to do this. If he is off the ballot in TX and other states - a few people will question - what is he hiding?
I’ve made the requisite calls to Tallahassee and asked that my state Rep make this an issue next session. With a Republican-controlled Legislature and Capitol building, I can assure you that it would be signed into law if brought up for a vote.
All it takes will be for a few states to require this.
This has the potential to get very interesting. I don’t know what he’s hiding, but he’s hiding something.
