Sarah Palin will soon be making people pay for trying to cash in on her name.
The former Republican vice presidential candidate applied to get her name trademarked last year along with her daughter, Bristol.
And over the past few days, the deadlines passed for anyone filing challenges against the trademarks.
According to the ex-Alaska governor's application, she wants to protect her name for business and advertising purposes, political elections, entertainment services and for 'providing motivational speaking services in the field of politics.'
Bristol, 20, who famously had a baby out of wedlock and appeared on 'Dancing With the Stars', is focused on 'providing motivational speaking services in the field of life choices.'
The final day for anyone wanting to dispute the trademarks was on Friday for Mrs Palin and June 10 for her daughter.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office said both Palins should receive their trademarks within the next three months.
It is the latest attempt by Mrs Palin to profit from her fame since being plucked from relative obscurity to be John McCain's running mate in 2008.
She has made millions through speeches and public appearances and is still toying with the idea of seeking the Republican presidential nomination for 2012.
This is apparently their second time applying to trademark their names. The first time, they forgot to sign the applications.

lol. Im actually surprised more folks dont do it....
There was an attempt to ruin her unlike any candidate I’ve ever seen. She’s earned it. The author can cry me a river.
;-)
Sorry....I don’t believe in this. Entrepeneurs are put out of business...shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, mugs....
Well, THAT will get the press off her case.
Maybe she can finally have a somewhat normal family life and sue the jackets off the jerks who won’t leave her alone.

Not so.
All you need is written permission or to pay a fee.
It’s actually MORE business.
It’s a GOOD thing.
Fey has no need to worry what-so-ever. Immicking and parodying her would never enter Sarah's mind.
If so, then she might as well put that tour bus in park. FWIW, I don't believe she if she actually did file the paperwork that she'd ever go through with it, but I've been wrong before.
I am just as ignorant as you on this issue. Perhaps another FReeper has the answer.
This may be smart business wise but what does it do to the average voter if she runs. Will it make her seem distant and insulated? Time will tell.
>> I wonder how this is going to impact Tina Fey <<
Good question. Also: I wonder how it’s going to impact any Palin for President efforts. I’m not sure, but it seems to me that all politicians / candidates are fair game by law. My memory is fuzzy, it’s been a long time since I took those Media Law courses.
She has/had to - people making money off her name. Should do the same thing for her image; haven’t seen a characterization of it yet, but ....
I’m not sure what the implications of this are. Obviously, news sources can still mention her name, so there’s no infringement of any right to report on or comment about her. I suppose this would deter people from making hoax claims that Palin endorses something, or from using her name to create a product or service that mocks or demeans her, or in some way opposes her values. There are probably people who would want to market a Sarah Palin sex toy, for example, and this would probably prohibit that sort of thing. I see this mostly as a defensive measure, rather than as some sort of money-grubbing or ego thing.
...Larry Flynts porn movie "Nailin Palin".
People making money emblazoning someone else’s name on stuff without their permission or profit participation aren’t entrepreneurs, they’re crooks. They’re why famous people need to trademark their names.
You make a good point - using Palin’s name on a product wouldn’t necessarily be done in a mocking way, as I suggested, but simply to make money off of her name.
I understand this - but I’m not sure the other usages can be stopped if in fact she’s an official candidate.
BUT - I’m not sure the other way either - I was just floating a thought from the back of my mind going back to media law courses.
