Seahawks' Golden Tate criticizes NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson
Seattle Times ^ | 7-15-2011 | Associated Press

LOUDON, N.H. — Jimmie Johnson has two titles he is especially proud to have linked to his name. Five-time NASCAR champion. AP Male Athlete of the Year.

Johnson was swept into a brief Twitter feud this week because of his inclusion as a nominee for male athlete of the year at the ESPY Awards.

Seahawks receiver Golden Tate posted on his account, @ShowtimeTate, "Jimmy johnson up for best athlete???? Um nooo .. Driving a car does not show athleticism."

Tate, 22, angered NASCAR fans and posted, "12th man get these rednecks off me."

More Tate tweets:

• "I've driven a car on unknown roads at night at 90mph no big deal. No sign of athletism."

• "Guarantee he couldn't in million year play any SPORT."

• "give me 6 months of training and I bet I could compete."

NASCAR defenders got Tate's attention.

"Apologies for my offensive comment to NASCAR fans. I actually read up on it and NO I couldn't race a car 150 mph," he wrote.

Same with Bass fishing...
OK, Now I’m kidding ;)

No, not really! Bass fishing requires physical prowess as well. I confess, not as much as other sports, but physical prowess nonetheless. But really, if we're not ready to accept bass fishing as a form of athleticism, we need to ask ourselves why, and seek to find some standard by which we can say that one kind or degree of physical activity is athletic and another kind or degree is not.

Nobody seems to have an problem calling golfers athletes.

What made Tiger Woods "Athlete of the Year" was his performance *away* from the links, not on them.

Simple! The standard is that if you can partake in the ‘sport’ while simultaneously “casually” drinking a beer, You might be Redneck... but not an athlete ... how’s that? ;)

Horses?

It's like tennis, you can have a lazy set of mixed doubles, or Wimbledon.

A fox hunt where the hounds find 3-4 times, or a three-day event, calls for stamina, athletic ability, and skill. You might make it through a walking trail ride on an old fat grade horse, but not either of those.

At Daytona and Talledega, 150 is what they slow down to in the turns.

Actually, I think that at those two tracks, they'd be overrun if they slowed to 150 in the turns!

Golden Tate would be dead.

Nah. Although Golden Tate would almost certainly wreck out of the race within the first 5 laps, he wouldn't be dead--those cars are virtually deathproof now.

Just as I thought! Baseball is not a sport!

But your batting average drops considerably swinging a bat one handed!

I would wholeheartedly disagree with both examples, having participated in them.

Riding horses gave me tight thighs, strong shoulders, arms and back.

Racing bikes gave me tight thighs, strong hands/fingers, shoulders, arms, calves, ankles and back and the motor reflexes of a rattlesnake on crank.

Dismounting from either ride does not suddenly make any of those benefits ‘go away’ and they help with the rest of everyday living.

Were it not exercise/athleticism, I would not be stiff, tired and sore after a long day doing either.

It’s tantamount to isometrics.

I never heard of this Golden Tate person before he made his comment.

I doubt I will hear his name much during the season either.

Seems to me he's not going to be much more than a back up, wanna be player for the Seahawks. Maybe that's why he opened his mouth in the first place. Looking for attention.

“Horses”

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing at all against horses, they’re much better than cats.

For me, an athlete is a person, period. Horses have no free will when it comes to sports, and whips or spurs are often needed to “persuade” a horse to do what is required.

But don’t forget bulls in rodeo-style (not Hispanic style) bullfighting, where the idea for the cowboy is to rassle the bull to the ground bare handed, and the idea for the bull is to throw and stomp the cowboy. Each contestant agrees on what his goal is.

Golden Tate should take a couple of hot laps for an attitude adjustment.

Better yet strap him in a passenger's and leave him there for an entire race at Daytona.

That would end his stupid tweets about NASCAR Drivers.

I guess I have a different idea in my head as to what an “athlete” is. I don't think just because someone has to work out and be really fit to do his thing automatically makes him an athlete. Is an astronaut and athlete? They have to be in tip top workout physical shape to even qualify for job. Is a pro dancer considered an athlete? I think the word “sports” should be in there someplace. Dancing is wonderful and so is being an astronaut but is that a “sport”? Now a guy in the Tour De France , in my opinion is an athlete. His legs are doing the work not a machine under the hood.

Controlling a racecar at speed as a contender in a NASCAR race requires everything that defines a physical sport.

I used to race on dirt and at only a mere 30 laps I’d be tuckered out.
