Alaska - lowest in the tax area, eh?
Hmmmm, trying to remember who was the “incompetent, inexperienced, and ill-educated” governor of that state.
Darn, just cannot get that name on my tongue......
Oh the other hand, I can name an incompetent, inexperienced, and very ill-educated president who is beneath contempt....
From this list you can easily conclude that the 10 highest taxing states are, or have been, Democrats strongholds. Conversly, you can make the clear case that the 10 least taxing states are conservative by nature.
Highest tax states are leftist politically.
Lowest tax states are conservative politically.
Not much else is new.
People move to low tax states from high tax states like California, New Jersey and New York to escape the crushing tax burden and intrusive Nanny-State liberal governments they keep electing and re-electing.
Once they are settled into their new, low tax home state the first thing they do is say how glad they are to be away from the high tax, oppressive Nanny-State government of their old home state.
The second thing many escapees do is to start whining about the things they miss from the old Nanny-State and complaining about the “backward” culture of their new state. (no opera, no symphony, no rapid transit, no free concerts)
The third thing they do is start demanding the same taxpayer paid Nanny-State services, handouts and freebies they were accustomed to “back home”.
Then they vote for high tax liberals and start recreating the oppressive, high tax, liberal culture they left behind.
Out west they call it Californication.
My Red State Brothers and Sisters if I move to the lovely part of your area, I will not be whiny or complain. Where I do draw the line, when these questions are posed to me: “Girl, you Vietnamese?” or “Do you speak English?”. Have a cool day everyone, it is already 1:00am in the Big Apple and Ninety-Five Hot Degrees of Humidity.

This survey is deceiving. As pointed out, there is a reason Alaska is a low tax state and it has more to do with natural resources than conservative government. Second, this survey lumps too much together. Take Pennsylvania. It has an obscenely high corporate tax rate but has a fairly low flat tax on residential income. The sales tax exempts food, clothing and a bunch of other necessities. I wouldn’t necessarily consider Pennsylvania a high tax state. It certainly isn’t a “soak the rich” progressive tax state.
Interesting that the highest taxed states have been run by the left for decades. Probably just a coincidence!
All the usual critters: Most in the NE and one California and naturally all socialist-blue!

Lower state taxes are beneficial no question. However, local taxes cab be a deal killer, you need to know what impact they will have in order to make a true assessment.
I’ve read through comment #44 and believe many of the posters on this thread have misinterpreted the article.
The focus on on the taxes against a residence. The confusion occurs, I believe, because those property taxes are then depicted as a percentage of income.
The article isn’t addressing income tax, sales tax or any other fees/taxes; just state and local property tax as a percent of average income within each state.
I could be wrong, but that’s my take of the article.
