In a campaign that has been chiefly shaped by debates, Newt Gingrich demonstrated Saturday night why he tops the polls and why he wont easily be dethroned.
Facing tough questions from his Republican rivals and debate moderators in Des Moines, Gingrich parried blow after blow without losing his cool or showing the much-discussed undisciplined side of his personality.
It was the former House speakers first debate as the undisputed frontrunner and not only did he stand up to the fresh scrutiny, he reminded Republican primary voters of his command of the issues, his intellectual dexterity and his self-assured, forceful arguments.
When Mitt Romney scolded Gingrich for his provocative claim that Palestinians are an invented people, the former Georgia congressman concisely captured why his brand of bombast is playing so well with a roiling GOP electorate.
I think sometimes it is helpful to have a president of the United States with the courage to tell the truth, just as was Ronald Reagan who went around his entire national security apparatus to call the Soviet Union an evil empire and who overruled his entire State Department in order to say, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall, said Gingrich, calling himself a Reaganite and then adding a memorable kicker: I will tell the truth, even if its at the risk of causing some confusion sometimes with the timid.

More dribble from Jonathan Martin.
Newt could have added “ and as Reagan was scoffed and called a cowboy when he put Pershing missles into Germany..and told that by ratcheting up tensions he would put freedom for the millons of Germans under Communist rule back 30 years”
Ah - the Politco pretzel publication.
Weaving and whacking - when will it end?
The media elites will be in a hysteria today. Both sides of the “Inside the Beltway” mob are scared to death of Newt and their loss of influence over us mere “unwashed”.
Who else on that stage would have the cojones to say what Gingrich says about Obama and the Palestinians?
This is why Gingrich leads....he will take the fight to the liberals, just like he did in 1994.

Money line. I'd love for him to get the opportunity to say one of my favorites, "I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed person."
Whenever Team Romney had rumors they wanted to start about other candidates,
Jonathan Martin has been their go-to guy to get those rumors in writing in front of a national audience.
Who benefits most from Sanford meltdown? Californian (that's right) Mitt Romney
"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"
"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"
"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"
"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"
"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"
I’m just waiting for Obama to comment....about how we should love our neighbor...
Newt won...10,000 to one
Frankly I thought they all did well, except for Romney (that $10K “bet” was unseemly). So much for Mitt’s storied “coolness under pressure,” eh?
It seems a bit empty without Cain in the mix.
i agree that Gingrich was right on the Palestinians being invented as a people, but i also agree with Romney that that was incendiary.
Isn’t it interesting that we have heard nothing about any of the Cain women in the media since Herman suspended his campaign. Political? You betcha!
i agree with you - but i am curious: who was right on that line from the book? i think that is more important than the $10,000 bet line.........
It was not the best line of the night, but a real keeper and it grated on the media's nerves.
Mittens even admitted {in his round about, timid way} that Newt was correct in saying the the palis were invented, but "it's just not nice", not done in front of the pali wymen and chilrun because they may blow themselves up.
To paraphrase Rush, how can something be incendiary to a people who are already on fire?
AMEN!!!
Yeah, real incendiary......now they might fly planes full of people into building full of people.....oh, nevermind.
