NEW YORK (AP) — Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan says the stigma of slavery ruined America and he doubts the country can get rid of the shame because it was “founded on the backs of slaves.” The veteran musician tells Rolling Stone that in America “people (are) at each other’s throats just because they are of a different color,” adding that “it will hold any nation back.” He also says blacks know that some whites “didn’t want to give up slavery.” The 71-year-old Mr. Dylan said, “If slavery had been given up in a more peaceful way, America would be far ahead today.” When asked if President Obama was helping to shift a change, Mr. Dylan says: “I don’t have any opinion on that. You have to change your heart if you want to change.” The magazine’s new issue hits newsstands Friday.

Shut up and sing Bobby.

Please Don't Sing!

Can't stand his whiney nasal singing!

Otherwise, IMHO, he was the most overrated, ahem, singer/songwriter/poet in history.

But, he was a liberal hippy freak and that’s the people who stand out in American history these days. Conservative entertainers are usually loathed.

Slavery has gone on all over the world forever.

The only way slavery has ruined USA is that there are those who still make a living off of it today!

Well, you can stuff it, Bob, because my ancestors never owned slaves and even if they had, I’m not responsible for what my ancestors did. If we researched YOUR family tree and found an ancestor named “Horse Thief Dylan,” would you feel guilty forever?

And I should add, that I’m not even that big of a Dylan fan.

Having said that, I would point out that he wrote the most pro-Israel song ever, “Neighborhood Bully”.

Ditto! He was the biggest put-on in the history of popular music.

Africa didn’t quit selling slaves. We quit buying them. Who stopped slavery?

It was about 1.5% of the population, with about 8% of US families having a slave in the household.

However, about 5,000 people owned 33% of the slaves - by 1860 slavery had become very concentrated.

One guy in South Carolina alone owned 1100 people.

What is this freakin lunatic talking about? Does he think slavery was abolished in 1965?????? The whites who didn’t want to give up slavery have been dead for 100 years. He’s completely lost it, talking about slavery and things that happened 150 years ago as somehow being current.

I am not ashamed of our history as we are the only one to fight and get rid of slavery.

Gotta call you out on that one. Canada abolished slavery in the 1790s and Britain abolished it in the 1830s. Britain went even further by deploying the Royal Navy to curtail the slave trade. The last country to ban slavery was Saudi Arabia, where the slave trade was legal until 1962.

Dylan can’t sing.

I never liked his songs.

I like only one song of his.

Did I say, “Dylan can’t sing”?

Shut up and sing (even though he can’t sing?)

Dylan sucks.

Dylan has ruined music for all time.

Bad Zimmy. Am I missing any deep thoughts? Feel free to add.

Mixed reviews, I know, but I’m going now to the record store to purchase Dylan’s new album anyway. Genius has his weak moments, too. See ya later...

didn't those who practice the religion of peace have a monopoly on the Black slave trade?

Not a monopoly but close; the biggest slavers were the Arabs but many African tribal chiefs also sold slaves to Europeans. Slavery was legal in the Arab world until the early 1960s.

Did Canada or Britain fight to abolish it?

While Saudi Arabia says they ban slavery you have to visit there - it is untrue. It happens every day - Slavery sales happen today throughout Africa, as we speak. Daughters are sold by their fathers in wife slavery everyday in the middle-east, India.
