Democrats begin effort to negatively define Chris Christie before 2016 campaign
Washington Post ^ | November 7th, 2013 | Philip Rucker

Top Democratic officials launched a concerted offensive Wednesday to define New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in a negative light, believing that he has emerged from his reelection landslide as the Republican Party’s strongest potential presidential contender for 2016.

Some Democratic strategists said the party made a mistake by not spending more money to attack Christie during the gubernatorial campaign, which might have suppressed his margin of victory and denied the Republican a sweeping mandate in a blue state. In the months to come, Democrats say, they plan to chip away at Christie’s moderate image and present him nationally as a hard-edged conservative. In Washington, some of Christie’s possible rivals for the 2016 GOP nomination also criticized the governor Wednesday and sought to diminish the significance of his reelection romp.

The maneuvering comes as Christie prepares to become chairman of the influential Republican Governors Association, which will allow him to crisscross the country raising money and campaigning for fellow GOP governors next year. Democrats said they will attempt to tie Christie to those governors’ most unpopular policies.

Christie demonstrated his strength as a potential national candidate with acommanding victory on Tuesday, winning 60 percent of the vote in a state that President Obama carried handily a year ago. Christie showed broad appeal, carrying a majority of the votes of women and Hispanics and making gains with blacks and young people — all demographic groups that have stymied other Republicans.

I don’t believe this even for a New York (New Jersey) Minute. They WANT him to run as the GOP Nom.....

They are just subtly trying to make us all think they are scared of him.

Monday morning quarterbacking by Dems refusing to acknowlege reality.

Reality is that there’s only so much campaign money to go around. Remember that on Oct 1 the DNC was $13.5 million in the red.

They could have gone after Christie, and knocked him back by 5-7 points, but would have pulled money away from McAuliffe and probably put Cuccinelli into that VA governors mansion. And Christie still would have won.

This highlights the problem the Dems face in 2014. They can’t outspend Republicans by a 2-1 margin everywhere. But as VA showed that’s what it’s going to take to ensure even minimal victories in a lot of must-win elections.

And why hasn't the GOP started chipping away at Hillary? Use some of that money you didn't spend in VA and produce some negative ads about her. Space them out over time and parts of the country, drive up her already high negatives long before the election. It's like subliminal advertising, the message doesn't necessarily stick but the impression does. The GOP always waits till the last minute and by then the Dems have already beaten us.

And why hasn't the GOP started chipping away at Hillary?

McCain is on the case - he started with a devastating compliment on Hillary's "outstanding work" as SOS and then hammered her with a series of comments on her formidability, deep support and fine organization.

The scampaign stickers from the Left area probably already printed:

I doubt it. They have an excellent record against pansy Quisling appeasers, so it would be more likely they'd be doing everything possible to secure his nomination. In fact, I've started seeing positive things about him, so I bet that analysis is correct.

Are you kidding me the LEFT wants Christie as our candidate, this is why he was given a cakewalk re-election.

On the same day he won NJ by a big margin a poll showed him losing the white house to Hillary by a huge margin.

Don’t kid yourself, the Dems are rope a doping republicans into picking this guy as the candidate, and it will be an unmitigated disaster if they put him at the top of the ticket in 16.

And that would matter if the goal were to elect somebody, anybody, with an (R). If they're de facto (D)'s, what difference do the deck chairs make?

Nah. He’s the candidate they know they can destroy. Ted Cruz is the one that scares the hell out of them.

Rand Paul: Christie Win Shows GOP Has Room for Moderates
Wednesday, November 6, 2013 06:25 PM

By: Bill Hoffmann

The sweeping re-election of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie proves moderates are an integral part of the Republican Party, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says.

“There’s room in the Republican Party for moderates, like Chris Christie. They seem to be the only ones that are winning in the Northeast,” Paul told “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV.

“The other thing that might happen in the Northeast, if we had a little more libertarian-leaning Republicans, they would have a chance in the Northeast,” Paul said Wednesday.

And there are morons on this site who are crying and whining" Why did 6% vote third party in Virginia?

Really Einstein? With a party of lying, weaseling traitors, you expect us to continue to vote for them? BTW, is`t Einstein quoted as saying" The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over but expecting different results."

Paul is not squishy, this is who he is, a libertarian minded Republican who realizes that some parts of the country will not elect a Ted Cruz type candidate.

Texas will. NJ won’t.

If conservatives want to simply be relegated to the south (and Texas is in danger of going purple by the end of the decade) that is fine.

In order to actually govern and move the agenda, getting people elected in NJ and the northeast is critical.
