I've gotten a number of messages in the last few days — from both supporters and opponents of gay rights — expressing sympathy over the rude and hateful messages I've been getting (and publishing) ever since I started writing about Phil Robertson.
This is sweet, but misplaced. The worst of my problems from being openly gay is that I get some nasty email. That means I have it really easy. In a country where gay teenagers are being bullied at school and thrown out of their homes by their parents and told by their clergy that they're going to Hell, we should not count my inbox as a hardship.
Rather than hurting me, these emails are a reminder that I have not just an opportunity but an obligation to be out of the closet — an obligation of which other people in my position should be mindful.
Being openly gay has always been pretty easy for me. I came out in high school in an affluent suburb of Boston, where attitudes toward gays were fairly positive and upscale New England standards of decorum stopped people from expressing negative ones to my face. Then I went to Harvard, where being gay is practically encouraged.
As far as I can tell, being open about my sexuality has never caused me any professional hardship — not when I was a banker, not when I worked for conservative think tanks, and certainly not now that I work in an industry that's more or less run by the gays....

No matter how hard these advocates try there’s nothing they can do to normalize homosexuality. They mistake many who ‘love the sinner, hate the sin’ as embracing their lifestyle. Nothing could be further from the truth.

yes I applaud what Russia is doing which is standing up for common sense that has been in place for thousands of years...Russia has transformed itself from a society where the consumer had nothing to a place that has come a long way...ISLAM has improved as well and it respects thousands of years of learning to move against parasite immoral lustful envious pure nasty homos....

This is beyond amusing, the squeaking and shrieking and carrying on over one bearded guy whose opinion is summarily dismissed by people who flatter themselves that they "hold all the power here" but who are clearly frightened to death by him. Weren't these the people who were not so long ago self-righteously claiming the right to be heard and who now, having attained it, are desperately attempting to deny it to anyone else?

How do you expect to change them if you won’t even be around them? Over the years I’ve shown democratic friends that their politics hurts themselves and some them have moved over to the right side.
As for homosexuals I show them passages in the bible which show clearly it’s a sin, rather than call them queer or avoid them. One of them is now a former homosexual who is happily married and has become very religious. Same with Muslims. I talk to them and I show them the error of their ways. Have had some success here too. Catherine by showing compassion people can be changed for the better.
