"Had Mitt and I Won, This Would Not Be Necessary"
Slate ^ | 15 Jan 14 | David Weigel

The feedback continues, with a bunch of military veterans and family members asking me how I could defend the callous COLA cuts to military pensions by way of explaining why Congress is trying to undo them. Another reader email:

I strenuously object to being asked to sacrifice any more! I risked my life in two deployments to war zones, sacrificed my health (I'm also a disabled veteran), and jeopardized my relationship with my family for my country. I find Congress' latest demand a kick in the gut. We veterans and retirees have sacrificed enough without having to endure the pain of COLA cuts. Congress must first reduce the COLA for all current federal retirees (including members of Congress) and Social Security recipients and demand additional sacrifices from non-military Americans. Or better yet, I'm sure there are $6 billion that could be saved by closing corporate tax loopholes, cutting farm subsidies to wealthy corporations, etc. There are at least $6 billion in waste in the defense budget alone. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will cost at least $400 billion, and it doesn't even work! But military veterans and retirees should be the last group Congress asks for more sacrifice.

If I've heard this much, I can only imagine what Republicans have been getting in their voicemails and inboxes. On The Hugh Hewitt Show yesterday, Paul Ryan was handed the hideous job of defending the cuts against a host who found them morally outrageous.

"Had Mitt and I won that election, this would not be required," said Ryan. "This would not be necessary."

Hewitt wouldn't have it. "This will destroy retention," he said. "It will destroy morale, and it is deeply unfair to the American military which has sacrificed more than anyone else."

Lying isn’t conservative. You should stop doing it. Unless you arent really all that conservative. Which is quite obvious.

“Lying isn’t conservative. You should stop doing it. Unless you arent really all that conservative. Which is quite obvious.”

You just can’t handle the truth. And the truth is you helped to facilitate Obama being elected President. Simple, irrefutable truth. And so now we are all stuck with a fascist President, no thanks to you. You helped stick us with Obama. What are you going to do for an encore, help Hillary win election?

“Going through life believing the things you do in the face of all available evidence to the contrary must be far more painful than a steak.”

“steak”, lol. That’s a good one, almost as good as Saul Alynsky. You’re batting a thousand tonight.

It’s a lie to say I helped elect Obama. I did nothing of the sort. Again, If you have evidence my vote was counted as a vote for Obama then election fraud occurred and as a conservative American it is your duty to file a report of election fraud in to the Board of Elections.

Now. Do you have evidence that my vote, which I affirm did not go to Obama as I did not check him on the ballot, or do you not?

This is a simple yes or no question.

>> I’m sure you bettered yourself with Obama, right?

But the hope the [Romney/Ryan] pair would somehow halt the decline was something I voted for as well.

That restated, I still feel today that R/R would not have guaranteed an overall improvement.

“Pain should be a good teacher. Well, for most anyway. Some people can’t be taught. You for instance.

There you go again with that “daddy/children must be taught” thingy you’ve got going. It’s really deeply ingrained in your psyche, isn’t it. Where’s Freud when you need him?

Ryan did his best to explain why the cut would only affect a small number of people (17 percent of military retirees)

I was not aware that "17% of military retirees is a small number." If it is so small, then I guess it can't involve much money, so we shouldn't have to cut it from the budget.

This is about a contract, and breaking the contract. The government signs a contract guaranteeing these active duty certain money that they count on. They are taking that promise back. They are, and according to Hugh Hewitt, a Harvard educated, practicing lawyer, breaking that contract, an act that no corporation would do without losing the law suit.

There are many things in life that outrage us, everyday. But for the life of me, I simply cannot understand why Paul Ryan and the rest of Washington seems to take such delight in pulling out the rug from disabled military veterans.

1. Not only did Paul Ryan make the "mistake" of including disabled military while jamming through his December budget deal, he said it would be "fixed"

2. He went on Hugh Hewitt yesterday and bragged that he was voting for the $1.1 Trillion monstrosity that included screwing our military out of their full promised pensions because it "helps our disabled veterans"

3. We now found out that this is untrue - tens of thousands of disabled veterans and retired are NOT covered, because those who had completed their length of service contracts and were then injured or fought to have their disability investigated by the Veterans Administration (and won) are not exempt from the "fixed" law

I have seen many betrayals from Washington in my many years, but this is perhaps the worst I have ever seen.

Thank you for reiterating the point.

This bill takes away promised distribution of survivor benifits as well.

Survivor benifits are purchased by the military guy. They purchase a plan, which provides for their spouse after the military guy dies.

When a military guy dies, salary and retirement stops, and so fast it would curl your hair.

This provides like a thousnd dollars a month. It’s an insurance policy bought, signed, documented.

What if an IRA fund, which promised under contract, a deal, just changed the deal reducing a fixed interest rate?

Its like if a mortgage company increased a fixed interest rate just on certain people but the most vulnerable, and the most needy and the most deserving?

That’s what this is.

While people are buying all kinds of ridiculous things with food stamps, Medicare and giving federal benifits to illegal immigrants, Paul Ryan’s congressionally approved plan illegally takes money away from vets future widows, because they can.

It is the lowest thing I have ever seen done.

I guarantee, these trusting folks have no idea what was just taken from them.

The military is being robbed.

Their spouses are, in effect, paying for the wars, which, according to Ryan, is what this plan is designed to do.

Obama is a very bad president, but this should illustrate what team Romney, I opposed in congress, would be doing to us
