"Had Mitt and I Won, This Would Not Be Necessary"
Slate ^ | 15 Jan 14 | David Weigel

The feedback continues, with a bunch of military veterans and family members asking me how I could defend the callous COLA cuts to military pensions by way of explaining why Congress is trying to undo them. Another reader email:

I strenuously object to being asked to sacrifice any more! I risked my life in two deployments to war zones, sacrificed my health (I'm also a disabled veteran), and jeopardized my relationship with my family for my country. I find Congress' latest demand a kick in the gut. We veterans and retirees have sacrificed enough without having to endure the pain of COLA cuts. Congress must first reduce the COLA for all current federal retirees (including members of Congress) and Social Security recipients and demand additional sacrifices from non-military Americans. Or better yet, I'm sure there are $6 billion that could be saved by closing corporate tax loopholes, cutting farm subsidies to wealthy corporations, etc. There are at least $6 billion in waste in the defense budget alone. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will cost at least $400 billion, and it doesn't even work! But military veterans and retirees should be the last group Congress asks for more sacrifice.

If I've heard this much, I can only imagine what Republicans have been getting in their voicemails and inboxes. On The Hugh Hewitt Show yesterday, Paul Ryan was handed the hideous job of defending the cuts against a host who found them morally outrageous.

"Had Mitt and I won that election, this would not be required," said Ryan. "This would not be necessary."

Hewitt wouldn't have it. "This will destroy retention," he said. "It will destroy morale, and it is deeply unfair to the American military which has sacrificed more than anyone else."

Simple fact, they should have the moral courage to cut welfare, unemployment, food stamps, obamaphones and a million others before cutting war veterans.

Actually it started when I asked in light of the latest screwing, if you wondered why I rail on lesser evil.

And you are oh solo wrong… I made a statement that ryan is dead to me. You decide that you have a need or desire to shoot people on your side.. Keep doing it chuckle head. It doesn’t make me respect you or even value anything you say

Voting for the lesser of two evils brings you less evil and that’s assuming that Romney was so evil. I didn’t care much for him but I’m positive he wasn’t even close to the disaster that this Nazi dictator is.

Your vote was for more evil rather than less and that’s after you lived through the first 4 years.

Pat yourselves on the back and reassure yourselves that you did the right thing in not voting for the lesser evil, but to leave the greater evil in place. What did you think would happen? Did you think that God would come to our rescue? God allows us to dig our own graves if that is what we choose. Unfortunately, too many out there chose poorly by choosing to not vote.

Thank you all for being the biggest reason that the rest of us, the Constitution and our way of life is being dragged down the drain.

Twits

Yup. And we should have the moral courage to vote them out when they do what they have done.

Some here want more of it it seems.

You are the great liberal supporter.

The cynical, nihilistic fear mongering worldview that you support in word and deed can only support the forces of oppression, confusion and leftism.

As I said on another thread...

Let us not forget the man’s own son telling the world that Dad didn’t REALLY want to be President anyway.

I still have to wonder why people who bitch daily about RINOs and the damage they do continue to defend a guy more left wing than any RINO now in office.

As for the evils of Obama, it’s simple. The RINOs now in office who are more conservative by EVERY available metric than Romney, have the power to stop Obama in his tracks. They refuse to use it. Inn fact, when Cruz tried to, they fought and mocked him.

Putting a more lib idiot in power would solve that? It would have fixed that? Electing the guy who gave his own money to fund dead babies via planned barrenhood, said he would be better than Ted Kennedy for the gays, avoided military like the plague, invented Romney care....THAT GUY was gonna save us from Obama? He WAS Obama.

What really gets me is the religious people who still ride that horse. Lets see...”Please God, I am praying to you that you help the guy described above become leader of the christian world.”

Gee...wonder why their prayers were ignored.

“Mitt didn’t want to win. He showed that after he backed off the attack on Obama after the first debate. I believe if he had kept it up, he would be president.”

You must not have been on the same planet I was, then.

On this planet, Repubs and Mitt tried to drive that advantage home, only to have a panicked media repeating hundreds of times AN HOUR how bad it was that OBVIOUSLY racist Republicans were picking on the brilliant Obama.

Had those two twits won, they would have passed obamacare as romneycare and it would have been plausibly tied to the Republican party.

I will pass. Obama losing is good only if it is to someone with different policies and nobody tied to Romney can claim to be different from Obama with any credibility.

well let’s see what happens in 2016…. we ain’t there yet are we.

If you think that I will let another Obama type get elected based on your evaluation of what is and is not ‘evil’ you are sorely mistaken. For all those who took your attitude and sat on their hands and gave us another term of the dictator you suck… period.

I will fight evil as I see it. Just like the US worked with Russia to defeat Germany I will pick my battles. If I chose to vote for the unlikely (from your view point) because I think it in the best interest of my country I will do so.

Had they run, they might have won. Romney got the nomination just so he could throw in the towel.

What a pathetic clown Ryan has turned out to be. I hope he gets primaried out of office. If not, then let the dems have his seat. We can win it back in 2016.

Its funny. So many people know better than the founders on each matter. They might want to brush up on Alexander Hamilton.

All of the Vets groups, according to Megan Kelly’s guest today, are on this.

They are focused on Ryan as the creator, Veterans are not fluffy, they are problem solvers by nature, are beyond reproach in character, and so are willing to be completely honest and to get to the bottom of a problem.

They are well aware that Ryan was Veep candidate, that the congress is majority republican and that this went through (and, I might add, without a cough from all the fair weather patriots who let their congress do this)

It is theft, and it takes money from the survivors fund, that was promised. That’s veteran widows’ pay after the death of the military guy whose pension has then stopped (it’s not like soc sec).

Ryan is taking money from veterans’ future widows.

And Veterans pay close attention to their money. THey plan save and budget and they talk about it a lot because all ranks have equal pay within them with well known differences, like for disability and retirement time in grade stuff.

Ryan underestimates them, as many civilians do.

They, in looking for someone to relieve them of all this misery, will look back on Romney and realize the GOP is hopeless in providing a good candidate.

I could be wrong.

I do think that those conservatives who did not vote for Romney will not think they were wrong and they will not vote for another stinker, and that that number will grow.

The only factor missing is a good conservative candidate. One comes up, and the GOP with their fat boy candidate will get pushed aside like a whiny cousin.

wow
You make great assumptions, I said nothing about my vote.
I simply said voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil.
Way to go, extrapolating an entire scenario out of that, that must mast you proud.
