They wont get medicare or SS cuts out of Dems. Dems hold the line on those, GOP holds the line on taxes. They are non-negotiable to the two parties.

Agreed.

And that is why we are in the conundrum we are.

And Ryan's solution was to cut those who have given the most to this nation. If anyone earned that money, it is veterans. That is why what has been allowed to happen is so pornographic.

To be honest with you, I don't care if the GOP loses House or Senate seats anymore. The GOP has abandoned me, so I have abandoned them.

RD:”To be honest with you, I don't care if the GOP loses House or Senate seats anymore. The GOP has abandoned me, so I have abandoned them.”

There are lots of comments saying stuff like that here.

However in this years election the Dems will take a beating regardless, but later in 2016 the GOP is due for another whipping,

That's how I see it playing out right now,

Dems hold the line on those, GOP holds the line on taxes.

There are too many examples of Republicans not holding the line on taxes, and then there are the "revenue enhancements" that they're so fond of any more. They find old fees to hike, new fees to charge, and dreamland fees to hope for.

It's the old Beatles song:

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.

Don't ask me what I want it for
If you don't want to pay some more
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me.

Honestly, if they Republicans could find a way to enhance revenue by charging everyone a breathing fee 'cause they do air testing, they would. And they'd proudly put it your cell phone bill and call it "Air Test Fee".

RE :”There are too many examples of Republicans not holding the line on taxes, “

If you are talking about the tax increase on 1/1/13, that automatic increase resulted from the way the tax cuts was passed in the 2000s under GWB and GOP congress.

They couldn't get the 60 in Senate to pass it so they passed it using a method that forced its expiration in 10 years, on Jan 1, 2013.

I know on talk radio a number of them they didn't want their listeners to know the truth, they misled them into believing that if nothing passed at end of 2012 that the tax cuts would stay in place and tax rates would stay the same.

It was a great lesson in what their purpose is. Its not to inform their listeners of the truth.

GHW Bush famously raised taxes...”read my lips”...remember?

But “revenue enhancements” are taxes.

Geeze, that was 1990, over 23 years ago.

Lots of water under the bridge since then.

GOP does not hold the line on taxes.

Who controlled the House in 2012/13?

1. Payroll Tax: increase in the Social Security portion of the payroll tax from 4.2 percent to 6.2 percent for workers. This hits all Americans earning a paycheck-not just the “wealthy.” For example, The Wall Street Journal calculated that the “typical U.S. family earning $50,000 a year” will lose “an annual income boost of $1,000.”

2. Top marginal tax rate: increase from 35 percent to 39.6 percent for taxable incomes over $450,000 ($400,000 for single filers).

3. Phase out of personal exemptions for adjusted gross income (AGI) over $300,000 ($250,000 for single filers).

4. Phase down of itemized deductions for AGI over $300,000 ($250,000 for single filers).

5. Tax rates on investment: increase in the rate on dividends and capital gains from 15 percent to 20 percent for taxable incomes over $450,000 ($400,000 for single filers).

6. Death tax: increase in the rate (on estates larger than $5 million) from 35 percent to 40 percent.

7. Taxes on business investment: expiration of full expensing the immediate deduction of capital purchases by businesses.

Obamacare tax increases that took effect:

8. Another investment tax increase: 3.8 percent surtax on investment income for taxpayers with taxable income exceeding $250,000 ($200,000 for singles).

9. Another payroll tax hike: 0.9 percent increase in the Hospital Insurance portion of the payroll tax for incomes over $250,000 ($200,000 for single filers).

10. Medical device tax: 2.3 percent excise tax paid by medical device manufacturers and importers on all their sales.

11. Reducing the income tax deduction for individuals’ medical expenses.

12. Elimination of the corporate income tax deduction for expenses related to the Medicare Part D subsidy.

13. Limitation of the corporate income tax deduction for compensation that health insurance companies pay to their executives.

RE :”GOP does not hold the line on taxes. Who controlled the House in 2012/13?”

Someone is lying to you.
All of those taxes went back up automatically.
They were ALL passed into law as temporary tax cuts.
The GOP house didn't raise them.
The law specified that they all go back up.

In the case of the income increase that is because GWB couldn't get 60 Senators to break a filibuster on the Bush tax cuts, so the law specific that it expired in 10 years.
Those responsible are the Senators who voted no in 2003.

In the case of FICA, that pays for SS benefits so that temporary cut in FICA tax was irresponsible to begin with without cutting SS too, which not one in GOP called for..
That was a Democrat initiative.

The house could refuse to send a bill forward, as with ObamaCare. They don’t.

A blanket statement that republicans hold the line on taxes, isn’t true. They make exceptions they want to make.

RE :”The house could refuse to send a bill forward, as with ObamaCare. They don’t.”

That would have raised EVERYONE'S taxes and been much worse.
Raising everyone’s taxes out of spite just because they cant get all the Bush tax cuts extended would have been a really bad thing, GOP would have deserved to be crushed if they were that stupid.

They tried that on Obamacare and found out that it stayed funded. Obamacare was funded for the first few years in the 2010 bill, so not passing a budget left it funded.

Going into these fights knowing the facts would avoid catastrophes.

BTW : I was against the FICA tax cut to begin with, so its expiring not being extended a second time didn’t bother me at all.

Maybe I’m older than you. I don’t know. I remember me some republican presidents:

Richard Nixon who liked wage/price controls and taxes.
Jerry Ford who liked balanced budgets and preferred taxes as the easiest way to do that.
GHW Bush who was from the same camp as Ford.

Bernie Goldberg made the point on O’Reilly not long ago that the real “Rinos” are the newcomer conservatives.

He has a point.

Then you might recall all those had Dem congresses to deal with,

If they wanted war funding from a Dem generally anti-war congress, Nixon and GHWBush, they weren't going to get it vetoing budgets.

The MUCH better example is GWB 2005 to 2006 with a GOP congress.

It was an executive order. The famous words:

“I am today ordering a freeze on all prices and wages throughout the United States”

Nixon had his hands full. A war that was already lost in Americans view that was running up debts, a Dem congress that wanted immediate surrender, impeachment.

The 70s were pretty ugly days and liberal. Its amazing a Republican won at all.

I voted for Nixon in 72. The wage price decision had already been made. The Watergate break-in didn’t happen until the summer of that election season. The investigation was after wage/price controls were implemented.

SHAME! SHAME ON WHOM EVER IS THE POWER BEHIND THESE CUTS AND MAY THEY REPENT OF THEIR HARD HEARTS.

PERHAPS CONGRESS MIGHT CONTRIBUTE FROM THEIR OWN PAY TO AID THE BRAVE, SERIOUSLY INJURED, DISABLED SERVEMEN.!!!
Fat chance! Only fair after all.

With trillions of dollars in the budget, much of it being given away around the world, why not take a portion enough to pay the monies of our veterans, and not disadvantage them.

SHAME on this action.

RE :”The wage price decision had already been made.”

Wasn't that just political reaction to an unpopular problem?

The Vietnam war was costing really $$$ and like with GWB raising taxes to fund it would be even more unpopular.

So they created the $$$ and appeased the masses with more bread and cheese .

And Nixon threw out that gimmick over resulting inflation.

Prior to POTUS Nixon's claim to fame as VP was calling out communist sympathizers.

It wasn’t even an issue with republicans back then. I don’t know one way or the other, but I’d bet he signed budgets with raised taxes.

The tax cutter, if you’ll recall, was JFK, who was the first modern supply sider. Reagan used to point to JFK all the time.

The republican party of that time believed in balanced budgets HOWEVER they could get them. IOW, raising taxes to pay for spending was just fine so long as the checkbook balanced.
