In areas where the bags are already banned, they charge $.10 or $.25

People are just going to say, "No bag - I ain't paying", and roll the cart with loose cargo out the door of Walmart.............shoplifting will increase threefold, for sure.

I would suggest buying a good old fashioned wheeled grocery cart.

“and they don’t know how to load them like the old days.”

Or one bag loaded with canned or heavy things and another bad with one box of tissues.

.

We are the Occupied Territories here. Gives me a chance to chortle as I bring my plastic bags, purchased at Amazon for $15, to the store. I sometimes tease about selling them to shoppers out in the parking lot. Of course, there are Free Zones - one about 3 miles from here - where they give you plastic bags! It’s very confusing, EXTREMELY STUPID.

Whenever I go to the sister city of the People's Republic of Santa Monica, also known as Pasadena (which used to be a very conservative town), I always say 'either bag it for free, or you can put these things back on the shelves.' Only one time has a store re-shelved the products, the rest of the time they simply bagged it and moved on. The only place that actually tried to defend the law was a sole checker at Bevmo of all places, when I rejected her option of carrying a bottle of whiskey out to the car outside of a bag. I told her she could refund the purchase, she refused and I went and found a manager who provided a bag and a coupon for a future visit.

It costs stores far more to put items back on the shelves than it does to make customers happy. I know it is a bit spiteful to play these games with stores, but so what; they should have been on the front line fighting against these stupid laws in the first place.

In Texas the store will pack your heavy groceries (gallons of milk etc.) in double paper bags with handles or double plastic bags, whichever you want. Paper or plastic they always ask. They offer reusable bags for sale if you want them but these is no big push for you to use them. Yeah, I know, we are real backwards here. :)

LOL! I started to say if any place in Texas banned plastic bags, it would be Austin. That is not to say that Houston and Dallas won’t ban them in the future but for now they haven’t been.

Don't ban the bags, just require every store to have their name on their bag and fine them $100 for each bag found as litter.

Well, most of them DO have their names on the bags, but otherwise your suggestion sounds just like those making gun manufacturers responsible for intentional shootings. Penalizing responsible people (bag makers and 90% of bag users) for the actions of irresponsible people is, well, a wonderful example of modern liberal thought.

It's the people who toss the bags, fast food containers, etc., out their car windows and such, who should be fined. (I have a nice long frontage along 2 roads that intersect, one fairly busy, and we have lots of bushes and trees too, so I am no stranger to litter issues.)

That is a wonderful counter-attack/ ‘bag it or put it back.’ I hadn’t thought of that! Well done. I have been told by checkers - ‘Make a stink about this law. It is only city-wide. We think it is stupid, too.’

I will not carry a cloth bag, either. Buys right into their little game. I got a box from Amazon.

I’d’ve thought plastic water bottles are more of a environmental problem, but what do I know?

Yep, I was looking at Amazon's bags....Sam's Club has them online, too, and I think I could pick them up at the store.

I've been in line while Obama types take forever to lovingly and perfectly pack their cloth sacks. They want to make sure everyone sees how environmentally conscious they are.

That is awesome. I could almost look forward to grocery shopping with a bag like that.

I did recognize when I posted that it was similar to the approach used to try and ban guns - a movement I oppose.

The plastic bags have got to go. They are everywhere and picking them out of bushes and trees makes neighborhood clean up projects much harder.
