Exclusive: Angry with Washington, 1 in 4 Americans open to secession
Reuters ^ | 19 Sep 2014 | Scott Malone

Posted on 09/19/2014 6:33:56 AM PDT by Rummyfan

The failed Scottish vote to pull out from the United Kingdom stirred secessionist hopes for some in the United States, where almost a quarter of people are open to their states leaving the union, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

Some 23.9 percent of Americans polled from Aug. 23 through Sept. 16 said they strongly supported or tended to support the idea of their state breaking away, while 53.3 percent of the 8,952 respondents strongly opposed or tended to oppose the notion.

The urge to sever ties with Washington cuts across party lines and regions, though Republicans and residents of rural Western states are generally warmer to the idea than Democrats and Northeasterners, according to the poll.

Anger with President Barack Obama's handling of issues ranging from healthcare reform to the rise of Islamic State militants drives some of the feeling, with Republican respondents citing dissatisfaction with his administration as coloring their thinking.

But others said long-running Washington gridlock had prompted them to wonder if their states would be better off striking out on their own, a move no U.S. state has tried in the 150 years since the bloody Civil War that led to the end of slavery in the South.

"I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference anymore which political party is running things. Nothing gets done," said Roy Gustafson, 61, of Camden, South Carolina, who lives on disability payments. "The state would be better off handling things on its own."

I know about those trapped in decadent hell. I lived in California before I escaped. But what is the multiple secession threat?

It ever occurred to you that the people living in that odd panhandle of West Virginia like things just the way they are now and your problems are your problems

Well, let’s see - Eastern Shore has threatened several times about secession including a few years ago. This year, Western MD threatened it. (I could easily move to Western MD now but would have to convince my husband to get another job...)

“It just doesn’t make sense to me that the US Chamber and so many in “big business” support amnesty. I cannot see any redeeming political or economic value to it. In fact, all I see is political and economic harm.”

It makes sense if big business and big government work together in a facists socialist government such as hitler’s germany. Look at Krupp. Alfreid Krupp should have been hanged but US, Great Britan,France, and West Germany let him out of prison and returned his wealth and factories and again gave him favored status.

I love Western PA, or parts of it anyways. A unique culture, great old time general purpose stores, plenty of unspoiled countryside and the weather isn’t to bad.

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, you can keep your panhandle. I like going to Cabella's in Wheeling. It is just if we could get rid of Philadelphia and Scranton, you might actually want to join us, because then we would be as conservative as West Virginia.

My proposal was strictly illustrative.

Things that are not happening regardless of wishful thinking:
Challenger to Bohner
States succession from union
Constitutional amendments getting ratified
IRS going away.
A shutdown forcing Obama to do anything.
Obama impeachment
The next POTUS justice dept prosecuting Obama
<<<

You forgot "17th amendment being repealed" (a pet cause of the Mark Levin supporters)

In any case, when it comes to secession I agree with Jerry Patterson. The conservative states shouldn't "secede". Instead, they should kick the liberal states out of the union. We'd be better off if we got rid of New England entirely and reduced California back to territorial status.

>> The ‘Palin will run and beat Obama in 2012’ claim is a close second. <<

Yeah, they claimed it didn't matter if she didn't run in the primaries, she'd just show up at the convention and be nominated by acclamation.

They also believed that voting for Newt Gingrich (who was in a distant third by that point and had only won two primaries out of two dozen total) would somehow result in a "brokered convention" despite the fact he wasn't winning any more delegates. I sucked at math in HS but I'm pretty sure I'm better than them at it)

I don’t know specific history here but let’s face facts of life.

GOVERNMENT has the power, and the guns. Don’t fall in for that socialist dogma that “evil corporations” are drivers of despotism and oppression.

When someone is trying to survive, what do they do? Many will not fight to the death but rather “surrender”. They do what the master tells them to do. In fact that is what fascism is - government telling us what to do with our property (enviromental fools, ahem). They let us own it but not use it any way, only what they allow.

I wouldn’t out of hand condemn native businesses for trying to survive and not go to the chambers themselves.

Great points BB!

The geniuses that are going to save the country will continue with their bilge. Ridiculous, preposterous and idiotic, all at the same time.

Is it time for “El Rushbo” yet?

For starters
Kick the UN out of NYC.
Kick the FED out of DC, give DC statehood.

Relocate the FED compound to Northern Montana, Minnesota, somewhere that is cold and mostly uncomfortable to keep people from ‘not leaving’.

Trouble now when these clowns get voted out, they NEVER return to their state just hang around DC and peddle their influence.

Unions out of the PUBLIC sector.

Only donations Pols can receive are from their immediate or future constituents. PERIOD.

When seeking higher office, once the person has secured the nomination, must quit the seat he now occupies. PERIOD.
(should do that anyway, as a ‘trust in faith’ to his supporters that he actually thinks he has a ‘chance’ of winning, plus when campaigning 24/7 you can’t have your present constituents best interest in mind).
If they lose the election, must wait till next voting period to try and regain his old seat.
MAYBE if they tried WORKING for awhile.

REASONABLE term limits.

Money received as ‘Campaign Funds’ must be either spent or used in any other way than a ‘slush fund’ for the Pol, just this week either Reid or McConnell wanted their fellow Senators to ‘dip into their campaign funds to HELP reelect or bring new same party members in’.

People mentioned Texas and seceding...if they secede on their own, they can look for Mexico to swallow it up ...apparently there are enough people in this country now to make that a ‘bloodless coup’ that will quickly turn into a bloody firefight.

* 5,000 Syrian Muslim Rebels will be removed from the battlefields in Syria to a training site in Saudi Arabia for one year.”””

Meanwhile, ISIS keeps spreading & getting stronger.

Not one little bit of difference when encountering a forest fire.

While agencies dither over who is supposed to go fight the fire, it keeps growing & doubling every 24 hours.

A similar claim that was repeated a lot around here was that Palin would just quit her FNC political commentator job in late 2010 and announce her run, and that even if she did tell FNC that she wasn't running in Early 2010 (as Newt and Santurum told them they WERE running back then) that she would just stiff FNC and go back on her word because her employer $$$$$ was mean to her..

Heck , maybe she could quit FNC just before the convention you reference....

The Conservatives for Palin nut-bag blog used to claim that the moment she announced she have thousands of boots on the ground campaigning for her. And that giving $$$ to Sarah-PAC had something to do with a Palin run.

Oh and the Palinistas here were darn angry at FNC for dropping talk about her possible candidacy toward the end of 2010 summer(as the debates were getting hot), after them teasing their audience with a possible Palin run all spring and summer.

My turn:

It’s not “to” late.

Sister Mary pointed out “to” is a prepositon, sometimes a particle. “Too” is an adverb.

I have a real problem with parents who will not move from their grown kids, especially when they are up against high costs of living on small amounts of Social Security.

Those kids can get a job transfer in the blink of an eye. Then what? You are stuck there, or you are “moving also to follow your kids”.

We are not traveling in covered wagons or on horseback anymore. You can visit very easily, even on Greyhound.

Most of today’s Social Security recipients do not have the funds to pay for higher costs of living in California, deal with the crime & gangs & illegals, etc, etc.

Let the kids with higher pay scales come to visit you-—and YOU GO where it is financially more beneficial to you.

There are plenty of choices——I have traveled the country alot in my 74 years. I cannot afford to live in the house I bought in May of 1966 in the San Fernando Valley-—even under Prop 13. I left So Calif in 1993 & I left the state in Dec 2004.

Don’t miss it. Only considering moving again now because of family member with health issues & I need to be closer to him.

Good old Newtie managed to win his home state of Georgia and South Carolina. Santorum would have provided us with a reasonable alternative if Newt had had the decency to put his ego aside after Super Tuesday. Or even after Santorum won neighboring Alabama and Tennessee.
