We have made it to where our Navy (or Air Force) can't incur any loses without it severely damaging us.
I read this entire article a few days ago. I commented about my concern of the vulnerability of aircraft carriers. But those with far more knowledge than me told me they were quite capable and well protected. I can’t imagine the United States is sitting back and not on the cutting edge of all kinds of military technology
I’m finding it very interesting that so much effort is being put out to deride Naval Airpower and Aircraft Carriers.
It makes me suspicious to say the least.
I can.
Later
It'd be more credible if it got basic information, like units of speed, correct.
2nd article in as many days or so, essentially claiming the same thing...
It’s a tad curious...

The real basis of this essay is that the welfare state needs the military’s budget.
There are a few other (good) points thrown in.
Power projection is always risky and I am sure that the Navy's working full time to develop defensive technologies to protect carrier battle groups.
My suspicion is Mr. Wise is connected to the Air Force. Those boys never give up trying to squeeze their competitors out of the air business/take their part of the budget.
That has always been the case. That's how we wound up defending socialist Europe.
In our case the guns/butter debate will be held in a media that gets a cut from spending on the welfare state and gets nothing from spending on the military.
“A carrier group never fed a child”- and a percentage of a carrier group’s cost never went to the media.
Actually, 200 knots per hour is quite slow. Especially, since the running time is less than ten minutes.
“I cant imagine the United States is sitting back and not on the cutting edge of all kinds of military technology.”
The United States was also at the cutting edge of military technology when Pearl Harbor happened. What made it possible was complacency, underestimating the enemy, and outright stupidity.
The fact is that our carriers are, and have been for a long time, quite vulnerable to first-tier opponents.
WRONG. On both points. At the Battle of Taranto, in November of 1940, the British sunk an Italian battleship and damaged two more - from the air with slow Swordfish biplanes.
Like I said in another thread, with that trouble in the China sea, I am concerned. I always assumed China was no match for us on the seas.
$6 billion dollar carrier, bad. $2 billion dollar strategic bomber, good.
Could that be described as ‘combat’ though? Its not really that hard to torpedo a stationary ship in port. Its a whole other issue to try and do it at sea when it is zig-zagging and your plane is facing anti-aircraft gunners from the ship and its escort at full battle stations.
“I always assumed China was no match for us on the seas.”
China is almost to the point where they could take us on regionally, with a reasonable chance of winning, especially politically.
The thing I hear most often on FR is the “China doesn’t have the sea lift”. Yet, they now have by far the world’s largest merchant fleet, MANY times larger than we do.
