I am one of those Freepers who side with the Sea Hippies against the Japanese whale-killers. I have spent the majority of my life fighting or preparing to fight our country's enemies, so I'm not a wussie but I also sail and have often sailed in company with whales. They are clearly smart and inoffensive creatures and I am strongly against the Japanese slaughter of about a 1,000 whales per year with the lying cover of "research" to make them into food in contravention of international treaties.

The Japanese even used tsunami relief funds to rebuild their whaling fleet and when an international court ordered them to stop whaling, they went right back at it.

Never been a fan of hippies but Paul Watson has his heart in the right place and I would hope that the rest of us would resist with the same gumption if we are ever faced with tyranny.

Then when an international court tells you to surrender your guns, I am sure you’ll comply. When the international court tells you what to eat, I am sure you will comply too because cows are smart as well and contribute to global warming. And someone else considers riding a horse among them a mystical experience.

Paul Watson is an ecoterrorist who stays out of Europe because he’s a wanted man there. Also, he makes a point of telling his hippies that they might get killed during his activities, but then when things get tough, he’s the first to board a skiff in the middle of the night and skedaddle, leaving them to fend for themselves.

Funny thing happened forty years ago in Oklahoma City. I was driving toward Tulsa when a car blew past me at a very high rate of speed.
On top he had a huge plastic whale and on was written...”SAVE THE WHALES! BOYCOTT JAPANESE PRODUCTS!”

He was driving a Japanese Datsun (Nissan).

As long as the Japanese don't threaten a whale species with extinction, what's wrong with hunting whales?

Do whales merit some kind of exception because they're large, or cute, or something?

There are lots of mammals which man hunts. Why shouldn't whales be among them?

I don't get it...

It’s not actually an international treaty. It’s an agreement within a voluntary organization (International Whaling Commission) kind of like G7 and Japan has been threatening to leave the organization for years. And the court ruling only bans them from antarctic whaling.

Japanese Whalers don’t just Hunt Whales, they kill them in a Tortuous Inhumane Manner. The Hunting methods have been modernized, but the Animals still endure a drawn out Painful Death that never seems to come up in Polite Conversation. After all, they’re just Animals.

Completely unnecessary in today’s World, but we still have Poachers Killing Rhinos to make the Chinese happy thinking they will get a better Erection ingesting powdered Rhino Horn.

Let’s not forget that they also have to Poach those Elephants so they can have a really cool Ivory Letter Openers. Nothing like having priorities.

I know this is going against the Grain here, but this whole Whaling thing is long on tradition and short on sense. We’re not talking about Eskimos taking a Whale to feed their Village, we’re talking Factory Processing these Animals despite the Inhuman Harvesting Methods.

Not arguing the obviously Popular FR view on this subject, just expressing a differing Opinion.

I wanted to let you know that there is at least ONE other FReeper who understands and agrees with your viewpoint.

Here’s hoping we won’t be banished to the Cornfield. LOL

"The Japanese even used tsunami relief funds to rebuild their whaling fleet and when an international court ordered them to stop whaling, they went right back at it."

Not surprising considering the history of japanese illegal fishing.

An island nation turned to the sea for sustenance. They harvest sea cows just as you eat land cows.
