Should Texas secede? Question may appear on Republican primary ballot

Texas already seceded once — in 1861, by popular vote in a statewide election.

But the Texas Nationalist Movement wants a repeat a century and a half later, and thinks the March GOP primary is the place to start.

The Nederland-based Texas independence group is circulating a petition aimed at getting a non-binding vote onto the GOP primary ballot over whether "the state of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation."

Their goal? 75,000 signatures from registered voters by Dec. 1 — more than the 66,894 the Texas Secretary of State's office says the group needs to get the language on the ballot.

Actually, Texas seceded twice. Once from Mexico over the rejection of the Mexican Constitution of 1824 and once from the damn Yankees. Third time is a charm!

Not sure where I come down on this, but we definitely have the natural resources, population, diverse economy to be able to survive independently. I don’t believe any other state is in a better position for this.

Would it drift Anglo, or Latin American? You could have a banana republic on your hands if the latter. There’s already a continent and a half of Latin America for your examination.

I would quit my job and sell the farm in PA, then load all my worldly possessions in my truck and cross the Red River for the last time in a millisecond if this happened.

Legally, can a state secede from the union? Legally there are provisions for admitting new states to the union, but is there any legal peaceful process for states to leave the union? Isn’t that part of the reason we fought a civil war to.prevent states from seceding?

They should wait until we know if Trump becomes CIC.

If he does, no need, at least for the time being. If a RINO/Dem wins, then 75,000 signatures should be no problem at all.

Once TX takes the plunge, my prediction at least a half dozen states will follow suit. Then things start to get interesting.

Governor Sam Houston once said: "Texas can make it without the United States, but the United States can't make it without Texas"

We will help to save America. Not by leaving it, but by leading it.

...but is there any legal peaceful process for states to leave the union?

In his Texas v White decision, Chief Justice Chase said that the states could leave by two means: rebellion or consent of the other states.

Thanks. So theoretically Texas or any state can leave the union peacefully if other states agree. Interesting.........

“Legally, can a state secede from the union?”

There is no provision for it in law. But once you’ve gotten down to secession on the list, legality is pretty much out the window anyways.

Shutting down that socialist cesspool in Austin misnamed as the University of Texas would be a good start.

“The FEDZILLA would never allow it!”

Of course not. The question though is what would they be in much of a position to anything about it?

If a state decides to leave, the remaining states are in quite a pickle. Are they going to send troops to prevent it? Would said troops be willing to fight? Would people be willing to join the military to fight to keep a state that didn’t want to stay within the union? None of that is a certainty. And then you have international situation. What if a new republic decided to ally itself with say Russia to defend its territorial integrity? Are the remaining states willing to play nuclear tag with the Russians?

Let’s hope we never find out.
